Are they selfish to have a kid at their age?

50 y/o Sharon Kollmar from Long Island welcomed a 7lb baby girl after going through IVF when she was DESPERATE to have another child in the family!!

She was so desperate to extend her family of rabbits that she asked her 60 y/o fiance, Gus to go through it and he accepted.

She already had an 11 y/o Son, Aiden from a previous relationship but wanted more kids and after almost a decade, she was still single and started to look at sperm donors

She explained her hen lifelong friend, Gus who is now her fiance about pairing up to strike a relationship to try for a baby

He agreed and they paid 34,000 on an egg donor and IVF and welcomed their new daughter, Bayleigh Emerson to the family

She said "I so desperately wanted more kids. People thought i was crazy for wanting ot start a family all over again. I've been to see fertility doctors who were dismissive because of my age and told me that although i still had eggs, the chances of me falling pregnant were slim. I was also still single. I was talking to my male friend about everything and out of the blue he said, 'what about me'. I'd never even thought about it before but it seemed like a great idea. He had always been in mine and my son's life. We dated and because i was 46 and he was 56 we tried to conceive right away. We were trying for years and looked into donor embryos but the cut off age was 45. So we turned to donor eggs and found someone who matched my colourings and finally i got pregnant".

She couldn't believe it after all these years at 49 she got pregnant and now she can start all over again.

People can't understand why they are doing this especially as she is nearing retirement in 15 years and Gus even closer to retirement and how they can afford it.

But they swore they will be there for the baby as Gus has a 39 y/o daughter already with 3 grandkids

Sharon wants to give hope to older women that the dream of a family doesn't have to end in their 40s and she feels much younger now with a new child in her life

Do you think these people are selfish?

At that age you should start adopting older kids, do you really want to be retired before your kid even finishes hs?

I don't think it's selfish, but I think it's better if they adopted.

Honestly, your 50's is probably the best time to have a kid. By that time, you have probably payed off your house and saved enough that you don't have to work while raising them. Now instead of needing a "work-life balance" you can devote all your time to your children in the years they need you to the most. If I ever have kids, it won't be until I am at least in my 50's.

Having kids is an inherently selfish act. Also, that is one ugly baby.
