Looks great. It's honestly mind boggling how a single dev can churn out games better than certain AAA dev companies can

It got some attention when the trailer first came out, but nobody's really talked about it since because there haven't (to my knowledge) been any updates.

Honestly, it's not that surprising. It's impressive that they can handle all of the different aspects solo, but fundamentally, making a good game has very little to do with budget and everything to do with having good ideas and the competency to assemble those ideas into a game. Larger budgets make it easier to find those ideas and talents, since having a larger team increases the chance of finding them and lets you assign people to different tasks based on what they're good at, but you also run into the need to resolve conflicting opinions and trash some ideas because the game needs to be more popular in order to turn a profit. Get into the AAA space, and you've got shareholders demanding ridiculous RoI's on every game you produce, which just makes that even worse.

Basically, there's a reason the indie game market has grown so fast: People like games that were made by people who like games instead of by giant corporations that are looking to milk games for every cent they can.

This.

The problem is, he basically just announced he was working on it. But we have no idea whether it's coming out this year, next year, or five years from now. We don't really know how far into development it is, and we know almost nothing about it. Even the trailer doesn't tell us much, because as people pointed out it's basically just using the Stardew engine with different graphical assets, which might just be how he's brainstorming ideas rather than what the finished product is intended to be.

We don't even know if it's the next game he's going to release, because he's mentioned he's also working on a third game at the same time (which we know absolutely nothing about).

(We also don't know whether or not Haunted Chocolatier is set in the same universe as Stardew - the dev has mentioned in the past that one of the games he's working on is set in the same universe and implied that the other one isn't - but we don't know which one this one is.)

To be fair, though, Stardew is awesome (I'm literally playing it right now - I'm on Year 4 Fall and saving up for the gold clock which is the last thing I need for full completion on this run), so I'm more than willing to give whatever new games he comes up with a chance, because they have better odds of being good than most games the mainstream triple-A devs are shitting out these days. And the idea of being a whimsical candy shop owner feels cool - even if I'm going to play it as if it's a Willy Wonka origin story RPG.

The assumption is that the game is probably just going to be an updated spiritual adaptation of Recettear, though - in the same way that Stardew is basically just Harvest Moon.
