I think people from anywhere can be albino. Albinism is more common in sub-Saharan Africa than anywhere else on Earth. They basically look like "snow-white black people." Supposedly 90% of albinos in Africa are dead from skin cancer before 40...

I mean, they're sometimes killed because their body parts or skin are thought to have magic healing properties, but omnipresent cancer deaths aren't genocide. The only white genocide I can think of off the top of my head is when Haiti became independant and they killed (almost) all the whites. I suppose you can also count the slaying of South African farmers, but I don't know how widespread that is.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was true. The whiter your skin, the more vulnerable you are to solar radiation. Considering Africa is the least protected continent against it, it's normal that skin cancer is common among pale skinned people living there. This is why some humans have black skin. Melanin provides protection against solar radiation. Albinism is basically a complete lack of melanin, so people affected by it are badly equipped to survive under the sun. The process of tanning is basically your body adapting to increased levels of solar radiation by producing more melanin. People with albinism are incapable of producing melanin.

Good point. I also want to add that being poor also translates to a weaker health care system, so there's nothing helping them fight cancer. Let's also not forget that poor education is responsible for them believing in witch doctors and pseudoscience. For fuck sake, many Africans believe that raping a virgin girl can cure AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.

Thats not what they are known as in real life. Its literally a fantasy term. Especially when you pluralize it to dwarves, which was a spelling change made by Tolkien.

Anyway on to the main topic, the most logical take I've heard is that since this movie is so far along in production and has never been referred to by Disney as "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs", Disney likely never intended to use dwarfs to begin with.

The idea that Dinklage alone made them change their mind is absurd.

Personally I would start the movie with a short disclaimer stating that the "dwarves" are a mythical race that appear regularly in classic fantasy and should not be associated with real-life little people the same way that giants in fantasy aren't associated with real-life people who have gigantism. Snow White without the dwarves wouldn't be Snow White.
