I'm a little confused on that.... I know that for the past few years Destiny has been part of Activision Blizzard, so wouldn't that mean that currently its a Microsoft IP with the buy out?

Bungie got out of that deal a year or two ago and have been independent

Never got how people don't get this. Xbox, PC... it all benefits Microsoft. They dgaf how you play it, as long as you are (and preferably on Gamepass). It gets you into their ecosystem and using their products.

Sony is like a tenth the size of Microsoft, so it makes sense. Sony itself is only worth like twice the amount of the Activision deal, so they have to be a lot more precise with their purchases. They literally can't afford to buy big publishers.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's rather amazing that Sony has managed to hold on to the position they have given who they're up against. And devs like Naughty Dog and Insomniac are a cut above anything MS has. But they have got to become more competitive with "services" like GamePass.

FYI in case you didn't see it yet there was a leak about a 3-tier version of PS+ to compete with GamePass.

Oh boy, Sony gets Destiny all to themselves.

Hopefully Bungie being under Sony means that their next IP will have a better story than Destiny's "I don't even have time to explain why I don't have time to explain."

Don't get me wrong, I actually really like destiny and they are excellent developers.

They will make a new FPS IP to replace Call of Duty, which will be Microsoft exuso e within 3 to 4 years now.

$3.6 billion feels extremely expensive. Like that's nearly as much as Disney paid for Star Wars or Marvel.

Bungie is a shell of its former self these days, so I'm not sure I see the value in this. Destiny 2 took a hard dive after they went independent and started nickle-and-diming everything.

Bungie is very talented so I see them fitting with other Sony-owned franchises. It will be exciting to see what Bungie can make with Sony's support in the future. I could see them making a strong WRPG series.

Bungie remaining independent and able to release multiplatform. I'm guessing Sony just wants the money they'll bring in on all platforms. Still seems a little odd not to keep them exclusive.

As much as Destiny's general progression model irritates me, I can't deny that the actual game play is excellent. The guns feel awesome and it's fun to play. From that standpoint, Bungie still has it.

Intriguing purchase, if Sony gives them free reign to do what they want without forcing microtransactions they could come up with something pretty nice. Like dark roast said the gameplay portion is excellent

This announcement is fascinating. Apparently Bungie can still decide what to make and where to release it. Sony just have to sit back and wait for profits I guess.

This sounds more like a Minecraft type acquisition than what Microsoft has been doing lately. Might even explain why Microsoft didn't bother with this.

It is a major shift of thinking for Sony though and another sign that console gaming is going to be pretty shaken up in the next decade. Feels like it's the beginning of the end of console exclusives.

Also Destiny 2 is Phil Spencer's favorite game so that's pretty funny.

I honestly thought Microsoft was going to get em next and thats probably why Sony hopped on it.

I hope they pump some cash into Destiny 2 though because as much as i enjoy the game its lacking from when Activision was backing their game.

Even that was just streaming. This is outright making money from multiplatform games and a continued shifting direction after their PC port initiative.

The closest thing to this was that MMO developer that seemed to almost have nothing to do with PlayStation itself.
