What kind of groups and extremists are you referring to? Have you heard about the purges done by the Soviets and Chinese, among others?

Social pressure, usually. People often don't want to be seen as the instigator of conflict by actively trying to exclude someone.

why don't people speak up when others are being harassed on trains or in the streets and such?

In a two party system, generally because they can't win a majority without them.

I've been struggling with this myself. I live in an area that Trump got like 70 percent of the votes. Why don't I cut out my toxic friends? There wouldn't be anybody else to talk to.

My friends aren't all "GET OUR GUNS AND LET"S GO FIND BIDEN" type of crazy but a couple steps below that. Some of them still think the election was stolen (but aren't crazy militant), some still refuse to get a vaccine etc.

99 percent of the time when we talk it's fine. We just don't get into too many conversations about politics. I'm sure they see me as their "token liberal" friend but I'm not really that liberal and anything to the left of Trump for a lot of people is socialist.
