Thoughts?

Mine: Pretty reasonable.

That's a good attitude to have towards those with whom you disagree. Civility and respect are tools that are required for a diverse nation to work through issues.

The problem I have with him is that the idea that all sides need to be heard must be tempered with the understanding that not all sides have equal merit.

I myself learned this the hard way, spending decades trying to be some kind of goofy both sides centrist. The reality is that in today's political climate, there really aren't centrists. Giving credence to that which is false simply because one side strongly adheres to it doesn't change the fact that it's false.

The fundamental problem with that is the assumption that the audience has enough knowledge to objectively determine that. I'm a highly trained Medical professional, but that doesn't mean I have any knowledge about engineering and architecture, so I couldn't tell you whether an amateur is better than an expert, because I don't have the knowledge necessary to distinguish the two.

If the host had no responsibility for the conversation, there would be no need for a host.

If you think the answer here is to remove Joe Rogan from the JRE and just have his guests talk and the audience listen, then I can be convinced of that as a path.

Don't start acting like all people are looking for objective news and information. The amount of people who watch stuff like CNN, MSNBC, Fox, OANN, etc. it's proof enough that people don't seek objectivity-- those viewers want people who agree with them but can package their biases in a way that makes it feel like objectivity.

If we crack down on personal opinions on podcasts and shows, we need to also crack down heavily on selective reporting, biased political leanings, etc. in all "news" media...

Which just won't happen.

I think if Trevor was talking about like, a chat around the poolside over beers then sure - "I don't agree with you but I still like you."

We're not talking about drinks by the pool though. We're talking about the biggest podcast in the world with a guy who courts controversy for the fun of it.

I mean even in the poolside beer context, you know that guy (usually called Derek or something) who sometimes gets invited to parties and always says the wind-up shit? At some point you do just get to say "shut the fuck up, Derek".

It's different when we're talking about things that can literally hurt people, in this case being Healthcare misinformation. There's a reason you can't practice medicine without a license, despite free speech laws. I don't see why the same can't also apply towards misinformation that puts people's health in danger

I don't think there is anything that I preach more consistently than this. You have to go so far out your way to get me to just throw you away as a person. But I will definitely use humor and/or honesty to point out stuff I don't like or agree with. I'm way more judgemental on the surface than at the core. And it makes it easy for me to identify people who are also non judgemental at their core. You just gotta trust them when they backpedal, that it's because it was just a loose judgement they didn't really have any deep commitment to.

You could easily just see it as someone being afraid to stick by their word when someone gives them pushback. But a lot of people just don't care enough to think it out super deep before they talk and will just give it deeper thought as soon as someone pushes back.

For this, I'm very forgiving and most (by a large margin) are forgiving towards me.

I strongly believe in the first amendment and not banning people just because they have different views than your own. That is fundamentally anti-democratic. But that said, public health and healthcare misinformation is dangerous and costs lives. It's not merely that people are entitled to different opinions, it's that giving a large platform to those opinions results in people dying, and not just the people who fell for it, but also the people around them.

Because this has to do with Joe Rogan who gives his utterly moronic and dangerous medical opinions that are factually incorrect and dangerous, putting many people at risk who then help perpetuate covid around the world.

He then invites "professionals" who also help do this because they are the one voice against every other scientist/medical professional.

giving opinions about medicine =/= practicing medicine

you are watching/listening to an opinion show/podcast. it is not medical advice, nor should it be treated as such. perhaps this needs a disclaimer (although it shouldn't), but its not the same thing as getting advice from your doctor

Yet millions listen and do take it seriously. He is putting out dangerous information that is getting people killed.

He knows this and doesn't give a single fuck. All the children, relatives, parents and so on of the listeners who now have a dead family member are irrelevant as fuck to Rogan. He doesn't know them and he doesn't give a fuck they are dead and are never coming back.

I think he's negligent too and doesn't care as much as a compassionate person would. But, do you really think these people would see some type of light if he was gone? Cause it's way more likely they just find the next less spotlighted person who enables what they already believe regardless of if they have any type of experience in the field.

The fetishization of civility favors inaction and the status quo. It's okay to get angry. It's okay to hate people. It's okay to express these emotions and direct them at people.
