NYC schools to serve vegan-only meals on friday. Via nypost

"The program, set to kick off Friday, will attempt to coax kids with vegan variants ranging from plantain and rice bowls to Mediterranean chickpeas."

Plant-based meals are delicious and nutritious, which is why I previously called for vegetarian and vegan options in schools, Adams said. Im thrilled to see that all students will now have access to healthy foods that will prevent debilitating health conditions.

new vegan mayor = new vegan rules!

https://www.pressherald.com/2022/01/09/save-money-save-your-health-save-the-world-eat-vegan/

The price modeling study, conducted by researchers at Oxford University and published in The Lancet Planetary Health, examined the cost of food in 150 countries. Based on 2017 prices published by the World Banks International Comparison Program, the study found that substituting plant-based for animal-based foods could reduce food bills in rich nations, including the United States.

Specifically, the study found that vegan diets were the most economical and could reduce grocery bills by as much as 34 percent compared to the food costs of a typical Western diet.

One significant healthcare cost that might drop with more people eating vegan food in the U.S. is the cost of treating moderate-to-severe COVID-19 infections. Throughout 2021, a trickle of medical research began to uncover a link between plant-heavy diets and milder COVID infections.

In June, a study published in the BMJ Nutrition, Prevention & Health journal found that among 2,884 frontline healthcare workers in six countries, including the U.S., those who followed a plant-based diet had a 73 percent lower risk of moderate-to-severe COVID compared to healthcare workers who ate more animal-based foods.

In September, medical journal Gut published a study out of Massachusetts General Hospital, which analyzed data from 592,571 participants in a smart-phone based study of COVID symptoms and found that those who ate the most plant-based food had a 9 percent lower risk of developing COVID and a 41 percent lower risk of developing severe COVID. Study participants came from the U.S. and U.K.

For decades, medical studies have accumulated showing plant-based eating protects against many of the top causes of death in the U.S. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2020 (the latest year for which statistics are available), the top two causes of death remained heart disease followed by cancer, both linked to high consumption of animal-based foods. Heart disease deaths saw their largest increase since 2012, jumping 4.2 percent in 2020. COVID was the third leading cause of death in 2020.

Schools try to make lunches as cheap as possible. No way a vegetable heavy menu will take off.

Kids eat so many carb heavy meals at school. In a week our local school will have cheese pizza, cheese sandwich, pasta with meat sauce and French toast sticks. And then 1 day of chicken nuggets or a patty. Hamburgers or hot dogs happen once a month. Its not like kids are getting tons of meat - its just too expensive.

Sides of potatoes and corn happen often. Which are technically vegetables but all the carbs are not leading to any sort of balanced diet. Corn comes up often because it is a whole grain, but when you already are eating so many carbs its not what you need.

Saying they are going vegan one day is great for PR but until you actually see what kids are getting, its up in the air on whether its great meals. You do know rice & beans is vegan so thats an option for what theyll get.

Hopefully it leads to 5 days a week. Its much cheaper to make those meals as long as they hire cooks that want to make the food too. Its good to open young minds up to a better alternative growing up.

Lol at the ignorance of some of the posts.

My school had double-bacon cheeseburgers every day. It was the one satisfying thing I had in high school. These poor kids, not being able to eat that goodness. I'm willing to bet that thanks to Michelle Obama, most schools in the United States don't have any kind of double burgers. It's so wrong.

Because government feels the need to force people to do shit, either directly or indirectly. Give the kids a choice and 99% of them will ignore the vegan options. Take the choice away and now its either eat lunch or suffer until you get dismissed. Making it on universal pizza day just adds salt to the wound.

Neutral. Removing options isn't a good idea, but there is a long history of the government trying to use social engineering to get children to eat differently.
