They should have been able to, but unfiltered immigration has devastated their population, now there are just 410,003 Indigenous people, which is a whole 2.2% of the population of Australia.

I think if anything shows the dangers of unfiltered immigration, it's Australia - their land was taken away by the new immigrants, and they have become quite literally 2nd class citizens in their own country.

Claiming a particular individual tree / plant that has cultural significance to them is one thing, maybe even the same for a given forest of it or whatever; but claiming ownership of the entire species is ridiculous.
