Maybe not in terms of level design or whatnot, but in terms of how fast you moved, the verticality of the combat, etc.

The rash of recent games that use similar mechanics has only solidified my opinion that there's a place for FPSes that focus squarely on speed and combat, instead of cover shooting and whatnot.

Unreal Tournament / Quake III Arena era. More refined than the mid-90s experimental 3D era, but without all the superlative fluff of the early to mid 2000's where games like Doom 3 and even Half-Life 2 infused a lot of active narrative/storytelling which slowed down the combat.

There's a place for both. I just got burned out on cover shooters because there was a time from the early 2000s to a few years ago where almost every shooter was a cover shooter, and even non-shooters had cover mechanics.

Prodeus is probably the best example of the kind of combat / movement I'm talking about. If you haven't played it, it's on GamePass for PC and is totally worth playing.

It was good but IMO Doom 2016 is a bit more like the kind of pacing I prefer.

Duke Nukem 3D is probably the earliest example of the kind of game I'm talking about, tbh.

Still feel like Halo CE did it best. You could go through slowly and carefully or you had the choice of blasting your way through an area. Both were feasible and you could tailor your 2 weapons toward either style.

There's not enough shooters like "Planetside" where you have JetPacks.

I actually played the original on Saturn. It's weird to think they remastered it.
