Playing through it for the first time in years and just having a blast. Also the German voice acting is pretty great to my ears.

Also settlements are fun, and I won't be taking questions on that.

4 is great. Maybe not as great as NV, but still pretty fun despite some flaws. People rag on it too much. I've spent hours and hours building different kinds of settlements.

I love blowing stuff up and generally causing mayhem. It may have many flaws, but it's really good for that.

Definitely. Just saw a twitter thread of people calling it "charmless" and bitching about how easy power armor ruins it. Like...I don't use power armor. Just don't use it early if it ruins it lol. It's by no means a perfect game but I've always felt like people were purposely trying to criticize it, particularly NV fanboys

I tried adding too many settlement building mods on ps4 and my game started messing up bad.

I was having a lot of fun on that play through until my major above ground settlement started making the world too unstable.

My vault was fucking sweet though. Plus a couple small niche ones I designed to fit their locations.

What few Fallout-brand itches I have that NV doesn't scratch, FO4 scratches them quite well. Most of those itches involve settlement-building, but the refined combat and world design do make for a fun sandbox to fart around in whenever I get bored of building.

Pity that the game stability has gone to absolute shit since the last CC update in 2019, and Bethesda has shown no inclination to do anything about it. I've given up on playing it on the XB1, so it's effectively shelved until I get a Series X or gaming PC.

the game itself was enjoyable enough even if it had a lot of suboptimal aspects. i loved the settlement building though. i got mods for it, i got good with manipulating placement and stuff with console commands, so i went all-out with it. built up The Castle to house a secure testing facility for that transporter thing, built a historically inspired abbey at Abernathy Farms, built a Minuteman embassy to the BoS at Boston Airport, though i never finished the latter two. i had plans for more stuff too that i never got to, like a Minuteman airship to rival the Prydwen, the MMS Paul Revere, and an airdocking station to house it at Finch Farms, a casino resort at The Slog, and a multi-skyscraper teaching hospital complex on Spectacle Island.

it really pains me when people say they hated the settlement building, and then you ask what they built with it and all they did was farming shantytowns. it's like, no, the settlement building didn't suck, it's just your imagination that sucked.

As much as I loved settlement-building, I'm loathe to give anyone a hard time for hating it, because the game is ass at selling you on the concept if you weren't already gung-ho for it. Very minimal gameplay rewards, strongly insisting that you kill the pace of the opening act to trudge back to the starting point and build beds, crops and turrets for a pack of unlikeable NPCs who can't be arsed to do it themselves, Preston locking you into a mind-numbing endless cycle of radiant settlement quests, etc.

oh don't get me wrong, the actual game mechanics for the settlements were absolute shit, yeah, like why the fuck do you even have to build turrets and why do they let you encircle the entire thing with a wall if you still have to go there personally every time it's attacked and if enemies can just spawn inside the wall. and FUCK Preston. but the act of building itself was really fun, if you got creative with it, and didn't just put up the minimum necessary stuff for supply lines and keeping the settlers happy and stuff.

4 was my first FO so I never had a basis for comparison but I loved it. I'm pretty sure it's the only PS4 game I Platted without ever removing the disc from the system. Settlements in particular were a lot of fun, I sunk so many hours into them.

Yeah Fallout 4 is still a lot of fun. If you're on PC, I recommend checking out some of the mods like Sim Settlements 2. It lets you be more hands off with settlements (if you want) and comes with it's own quest chain. Although I think it's only voiced in English.

I hate how the assault rifle looks. It looks ugly and looks and acts more like a light machine gun. Don't know why they didn't bring back either the old one from NV or the old LMG from NV. Or maybe even the Chinese assault rifle from 3.

Sounds like they did a bad job on the weapon designs for the most part.

I really enjoyed it once they added hardcore mode with no fast travel. Actually had to plan routes and food consumption. Also played a female melee berserker and utterly broke the game it was so much fun. 1 shotting that queen crab thing with my axe was sooooo satisfying.

Yeah, the ballistic weapon designs are...not great. Energy weapons aren't anything to write home about either. The only one that kicks ass in form and function is the Gatling Laser, and that's hampered by A) being rare as hell, and B) clogging up your inventory with half-spent Fusion Cores every time you reload. And the melee and unarmed selection was just depressing. On one hand, I can appreciate that they took a more scrapped-together approach to weapon design, but on the other, I'd much rather be using a sleek FO3 / NV-era Super Sledge than FO4's busted-ass model. The DLC at least gave melee a couple juicy new options, but holy cow was unarmed left out in the cold in this game. And don't even get me started on Pipe weapons, I'd rather run out of ammo and fight with my bare fists than use those at any point in the game.

Once I downloaded the excellent Wattz Laser Rifle mod, It quickly became apparent that for the vast majority of my playtime I'd all but thumbed my nose entirely to vanilla weapons and was just using three variants of the same mod weapon (a sniper Wattz for long-range combat, the unique Enclave Wattz with plamsa shots for mid-range, and an Institute Wattz w/ beam splitter for close-range).

It's bizarre to me that not only did they take a Lewis gun and present it as a rifle, but that it's semi-automatic by default. Nothing about that gun makes any sense.

The settlements contribute nothing to the game. You don't get anything good for building them or taking care of the people. Also without mods all the stuff you can build looks like shit.

That shit is so much better than the base game.

Vanilla settlement building was meh but once you add mods that grant extra features (such as actually being able to clean up trash) it improves immensely.

I enjoyed building settlements, making themed places and what not, but everything else around them was incredibly annoying. From Preston, to the attacks and so on. I don't think the negatives outweigh the positives, but they were an incredible drag that often soured my experience of the game.

But ultimately the game does what it does well, which is give an open sandbox. It sadly fails pretty badly on the main story (much like Skyrim) but the NPC's (party members) were easily some of the best Bethesda's done, and personally I enjoyed them all. It also had several fun and engaging side quests. I enjoyed the game, but it didn't win me over Skyrim in the end - which is the "Bethesda game" I go to, even over New Vegas, as a NV fangirl as they provide different experiences in my mind.

And yes, like any Bethesda game, it truly shines under mods.

Is there any mods on PC that makes settlement building easier or more streamlined? Like i enjoyed it a bit and then completely stopped playing.

However i would like to give it another chance someday and especially now that i have a good PC to run it on, but i feel like i take wayyyy to much time with settlement building and would rather have some mods that make it a bit faster but still can be really detailed with it as well. And just easier to understand cause to me getting lights and other things working sometimes was confusing as fuck.

The gameplay and stuff was always fun, didnt feel very much like a regular fallout, but still had enough there that it was fun and enjoyable.

Good things about Fo4

Kellog was legit a compelling antagonist. Lots of layers and depth to him. It was interesting learning about his past.

Creature design was really good. Death claws, mirelurks, bloodbugs, ..all looked great and terrifying.

Weapon crafting was really good
