I believe it is mentioned in the books that those needing to pass something to go to what amounts to "post-secondary" still had that opportunity.

I figured that wouldn't apply to owls/newts, those are closer to the SAT or ACT, not your regular final exams.

I mean this is the same school that gave a 12-year-old a time machine for no other reason than being a bit of an over-achiever. I'm sure they're no strangers to making special accommodations for students. In this case, letting them take cancelled exams, lol.

On the other hand, a number of students were withdrawn by their parents that year, iirc, so it probably doubled as a way to let 5th and 7th years defer their regular OWLs/NEWTs if they missed out on classes during the reign of the racist snake.
