The remnant on the shard in your body is some kind of viral proliferator that is slowly effecting you on the molecular level. Making you stronger, faster, tougher, able to leap further and have increased stamina. These effects continue to progress every day. However at the same time you notice yourself becoming more callous and an asshole to others. Then you realize the same viral agent is also altering your brain. Making you more impulsive, reducing your conscience and moral code. You start having errant thoughts about doing sadistic cruel horrible things and start getting bored or laughing when talking to your family or hearing stories about other people suffering in the news. These effects also continue to progress every day. It is unknown how much this would be affected by your willpower. Doctors can remove the remnant with a simple surgery. However if you remove it too quickly, you'll never develop enough to be superpowered. Meanwhile if you wait too long, you'll become superpowered but start to turn evil.
