That should bring them from $0.02/hour for their labour up to about $0.25/hour, so I guess it's a step in the right direction.

Sounds like a good idea. If you want people to reform you have to give them a reasonable chance of finding a stable life when they get out of prison.

And with that...pow! I'm gone!

Gives them the opportunity to rent a shitty apartment and with first and last month's rent, plus they might have enough left over to get groceries and a bus pass.

I'm sure there will be someone who spends it all on prostitutes and blow, but I would rather give the recently incarcerated the benefit of the doubt and hope they choose to try and re-enter society.

Free crack pipes and $600 monthly payments with $200 in food stamps for the drug addicts and now criminals are getting paid

Meanwhile the responsible tax payer gets squat

How much do you think the alternatives to those programs cost?

The responsible taxpayer gets to live in a society where addiction is a public health issue and people who have paid their debt to society have a chance to re-enter and contribute to society.

Though I hear Somalia is a great, apparently it's really nice in the three blocks that surround the government district in Mogadishu.

I feel like a program like that should be based on circumstances, but long-time prisoners often need some kind of assistance to reestablish their lives.

This seems like something we should after completetly rebuilding our justice system from the ground up to be primarly restorative rather than punitive, but people always want quick and easy answers I guess.

It is very much not enough to solve the fundamental problem, but it's at least a step in the right direction. Now, instead of having no skills, no network, no supports of any kind, and only enough money for a month's groceries, they'll have no skills, no network, no supports of any kind, and enough money for a month's groceries and a month's rent!

That will get ya a studio for a month in some places. Giving someone the chance to get a roof over their head while they look for work will definitely help keep people from re-offending, which is a net benefit to the state.

That's a relentlessly lazy fix, and is one step worse than having the government decide how money is spent.

I'd rather focus on making sure they got a home to go to and a job. But they do need help to keep from coming back.

Wish we had more companies like Dave's killer bread that makes a point of hiring former inmates. They make pretty damn good bread too. Only wheat bread I like
