I think it's..

Despite what you may think, there are actually quite a lot of jrpgs that featured black characters...and 9 of these games had at least one black character but only ONE did not have any. That includes either main or supporting black characters who actually had a name to them in the game and not a random townsperson..

So let's see if people can guess which did not

WTF? Of course it is.

I could see the argument for 2 or 3 not being a JRPG, but the first one absolutely is. Just more action then turn-based.

I was assuming 1 was like 2, so my fault here.

OK, yea 2 is like Resident Evil with magic. The first actually plays more like Quest 64 with guns. Except way better then Quest 64.

Tales of Eternia even has Meredy on the box...

Karn/Danq, Danved, who is most certainly not Devdan and whatever that skateboarding kid was called.

No clue about the other six games.

Dark Cloud has Ungaga who is arguably more tribal/native than black, but I could understand why people would assume he was at a glance and he would potentially qualify. So it's probably not that.

Edit: How do we DEFINE black? Japan isn't, exactly, the most progressive nation out there, especially in regards to racial stereotypes. So are we talking someone with simply dark skin or someone who distinctly fits the potential racial stereotypes? Such as Devdan's curly hair/pesudo-afro?

He definitely should count going by tvtropes and google.

Parasite Eve takes place in the US from what I remember and has the police officer going by tvtropes.

Leaving the Suikodens, Ni no Kuni and Xenoblade as possibilities.

Was Otharon from Xenoblade black? His skin was pretty dark. I'd probably say Xenoblade has black characters...

Just going through character folders on tvtropes for Suikoden II, Suikoden V and Xenoblade allows me to add them to the list.

Only leaving Ni no Kuni.

Does Path of Radiance actually have "black" characters, or just characters with darker skin tones than pure white animu boys?

*edit* after googling, yes exactly one black character who isn't just a darker skin toned animu boy

jokes on ALL of you as NONE of you got it right whoever that is. Suikoden V was the answer as they did have a dark skinned character in the game, their origins are unknown and it was likely they were indian or native but not a black character. i used this site to get all the others however.

Ok then by that logic your entire premise is shit since the girl in Ni No Kuni isn't black. She's based off ancient Egypt.
