Yeah, I don't get it either. I'd be bored to death, since I rarely play games more than once these days. It is fun to watch sometimes, though.

But that's just practicing a specific play for a whole dynamic game that changes every time. It's nothing like playing a video game with the same motions and same events literally every time, barring minor RNG bullshit.

If it can't be speed run in 5 or less hours, it's too long

2-3 hours is that sweet spot

what about any single-person sport then? or something like learning a song on an instrument? I think it really is just that people like to practice and be good at different things and no matter what you choose to practice you will need to put a lot of time in

speedruns are a little unusual I guess in that a single run is much longer than the equivalent in other areas

well also there are speedruns with differences between runs that aren't "minor rng bullshit" too

A lot of it seems to be figuring out how shit is programmed and then work the system. That part at least seems interesting. Like sequence breaking and everything is at least less boring than just memorizing the level imo

Slight variation-- I was a part of a group of people who used to Speedrun the Jade map in ME3 MP on Platinum to farm credits as fast as possible.

While it could get boring, chatting with everybody (and sometimes drinking) kept it fun. One night we had a full party playing a drinking game for a few hours and we all ended up incredibly shit faced. Good times, lol

They have to be good at the run as it is, but there's also a big problem solving component. What can change to kale things go faster? If there's a bug, can it be exploited for a time savings? If you go out of the way for health, can you tank a hit later? I don't know sports, really, but speedrunning seems like it would take a lot more creativity, planning, and problem solving. I guess it's just a matter of what interests you.

Also, randomizers are getting really popular.
