I wonder how things might have turned out if the Avengers game didn't muddy the waters.

but tbf, we only started seeing footage about a month or two before its release, so the marketing wasn't too great.

This. There's too much comic book IP all over the place and none of it's interesting or engaging unless you've consumed every other piece of comic book IP.

I haven't played it yet, but I bought it on sale due to the great word of mouth.

Didn't the Tomb Raider games as well? I feel like SE needs to have more realistic expectations.

Considering it's Square Enix one still has to consider if the initial sales expectations were even reasonable to begin with.

the first trailer i saw for it made the gameplay look like terrible floaty western character action game shit and i was immediately uninterested. the stuff i saw post release looked better for sure but by still nothing amazing

Its action rpg combat with party management and cooldowns

to be fair the strongest aspect of the game is definitely the story/presentation/humor/characters

The girl who played karen in mean girls (she was the dumb one) could have been Gomorrah but she thought the movie was going to fail and didn't want to be in the first marvelverse movie to be a flop

Yeah Marvel Avengers didn't do this game any justice, but I also think that SE just has unrealistic expectations for their games. They probably wanted this game to sell gang buster numbers like FF7Re or something.

Guardians is pretty good but the marketing campaign was awful and Avengers being boo boo certainly didn't help at all. For anyone here who hasn't played it, it's worth a playthrough for the story and characters. The combat portion is just okay but nothing special. Thankfully, the game is fairly short at around 15 hours so it doesn't overstay its welcome.

Game is utterly fantastic and in a world where AAA games dont come anywhere close to expectations, this is exactly what should be expected out of AAA development.

Tbh it probably should have outsold FFVII Remake if it didn't. GOTG was a multiplat game at launch attached to a big IP.

Nah if you're gonna buy GotG I'd use your "free" option on something worth more and wait for Avengers to hit dirt dirt cheap or show up free on PS+.

Personally lost all interest once I heard it was Star Lord only

The gameplay didn't look that compelling from the pre release material for me. Linear action adventure romp is a touch stale.

Gotg doesn't seem all that interesting to me.

from what I understand, the gameplay is kinda like the Mass Effects, where you only control one character (Star Lord), but you can call on your teammates to use special abilities.

I also hear that the writing, art direction, and soundtrack are great, so I'll jump on it after clearing up some of my backlog.
