Can someone give me a quick rundown? Does Ukraine have some amazing natural resources?

Oil pipeline and bordering countries?

Because it was part of the USSR and he wants to rebuild the empire. Baltics will probably be next.

Logistically it's the gas pipelines and Black Sea access but his rant yesterday about Lenin and how Ukraine has no right to exist points towards him actually being insane

Yeah, they already own a quarter of the goddamn planet. Granted, most of it is cold empty wilderness, but still.

Obviously resources are part of it, but he saw a giant surge of popularity in 2014 after the annex of Crimea. Hes looking to repeat that.

Its also worth noting that Putin isnt targeting Ukraine because its invaluable. Hes targeting them because theyre vulnerable.

On top of some of the economic reasons as I understand it Putin may have backed himself into a really stupid corner with how he has governed post soviet Russia.

It's no secret wealth in Russia has been funnelled to oligarchs. It is also obvious that Putin has ramped up propaganda and presented himself as a hero of Russia. So in some ways Putin is in a bad spot because Russia's economy isn't doing so well, and bordering nations are getting more comfortable with the West (eg the idea Ukraine may join NATO).

Considering the image Putin is built, it'd be really bad for him (like get lynched by a mob bad) if the Russian economy tanks and he let's Ukraine fall into the hands of a political enemy. So he now has to invade to secure himself so Ukraine doesn't move westward, and if the economy does get rough the reason is their united enemies the west crippling them, not because the rich have been embezzling the shit out of Russia.

It's a very very stupid situation enabled by corruption, misinformation (propaganda) and a lack of democracy which Ukraine and the world now has to deal with.

I think it is a multi pronged thing, some buy into propaganda, others know not to step out of line so they don't get disappeared in the middle of the night.

But if the economy was in absolute ruins to the point people can barely afford to live? That always results in riots in the street. The facade would fall away and scared people would be more emboldened

People who investigate Russia's actions abroad tend to suddenly die in totally normal circumstances.
