S4 was largely forgettable, but at least it had a more upbeat feel to it. Plus it has Britta in her underwear swinging Tarzan-style out of a window. I also liked that they briefly course-corrected Pierce's flanderization and gave him some genuine moments like he had in S1, like the barber shop or the Sadie Hawkins episode. On the other hand, if I could pick one word to describe S5, it would be 'depressing.' Or 'bitter.' I felt this way while watching it when it aired, and a rewatch only further solidified this sentiment. The writing was better, and a couple of the episodes were still enjoyable, but it didn't make up for the overall downward shift in tone. This is also about the time when Abed's meta-humor transitions from winking at the camera to blasting an airhorn at it. And yes, the smug not-so-subtle digs the show makes at S4 were the opposite of endearing. I was genuinely surprised with how much I enjoyed S6; it had plenty of faults (Abed's meta-humor is just as bad as in S5) and ended on a lackluster note, but I never would have guessed I'd end up liking overall like I did. I now wish Keith David had been around for the entire series, and I quite liked Paget Brewster's character too (though she was underutilized).
