set up a booth, buy some soda and go in front of a campus/store and ask strangers if they can tell the difference between different brand of sodas

or go to a restaurant and interview the chefs the steps they taken to become a professional cook

Never seen or heard of someone giving assignments like that and Ive taught 13 years in several schools. Seems a bit excessive to force kids to do that, especially since many dont have the means like you say.

School just shouldnt exist. You either gotta spend money to travel there or spend money on a computer and internet for zoom.

I had to do a community service project in Civics in high school but that was it besides that.

And I teach 12th grade English now. I never assign homework unless they were goofing off and didn't finish their class work in-class. Never assign reading either, since I know they'll just Sparknote it. We just do everything in-class.
