Arthas and Sylvanas basically did the same shit. They both were manipulated by Warcraft Satan. But one gets forgiven and the other doesn't

I think Arthas' fate is fine, they just shouldn't have immediately invited the comparison to Sylvanas.

The story is really, really, really bad. The Jailer (the WoW Satan TC mentioned) was heavily retconned to be involved in virtually every major aspect of the lore and he's also arguably the most boring character in the franchise.

Ive only played WC3 so Im sure I'm missing something, but I thought the act of taking frostmourne destroyed his soul.

If the same fate befell Sylvanas, I wouldn't mind as much. It's the hypocrisy that bothers me

Wrath of the Lich King was released around the time when vanilla WoW players (not me, I'm a total Wrath baby) were entering adult hood and had to give up the game. A lot of them look back on Arthas with childhood nostalgia of playing one of the greatest games of all time while still being in high school / college. Without having played Shadowlands, my first instinct tells me the entire thing has been planned out for years, way, way before all the controversy Blizzard had last year. If Arthas hasn't been given a redemption arc, it's because they plan on using him again in the future.

Lmao it's like they copied FFXIV with Endwalker wrapping up the story so far, but without any of the planning involved. Real DCU vs MCU moment.

The last time Warcraft had an actually good story during the vanilla (and that was mostly through world building, there wasn't some grand overarching plot). The story also took a huge nosedive starting with Warlords of Draenor. From what I've seen Shadowlands seems to somehow go even deeper in terribleness.

back when it was personal stakes political squabbling with the occasional interference of a cosmic entity or demigod/demon, shit was dope and actually intriguing, with plenty of room for character development

unfortunately they fell into a trap of continually raising the stakes to the point that everything is just absolutely silly. we went from the fate of a nation, to the fate of a continent, to the fate of the world, to the fate of two worlds, to the fate of the galaxy, to the fate of the timeline, to the fate of reality and all alternate realities, and blizz thinks they still have room to have characters morally grandstand about war crimes

Yes. In short, the only thing the Jailer isn't ultimately responsible for are the Old Gods and the Void Lords. Personally, the dumbest retcon by far is that Kel'thuzad was always aware of and serving the Jailer.

I disagree. I think the best plot WoW ever had was the rise and fall of Garrosh. MoP itself also had quite a good storyline.

I have no problem with Arthas's fate.

Sylvanas should have never been redeemed, and even for a company that loves redeeming villains it was a fucking horrendous decision.

Yeah, this, and I say that as someone that liked both characters.

Sylvanas being made into Kerrigan 2.0 has got to be the biggest pile of doggshit Blizzard has squirted out for Warcraft, and I'm so fucking done with that entire franchise going forward. (Not that I'm clinging especially tight to anything else they have.)

If you ask me, Arthas deserved redemption more than Sylvanas did

This is that same storyline, they just ended it terribly.

At least Arthas is safe from being further kicked around like the walking meme they turned Kael'thas into.

Like 90% of what Arthas did was not of his own free will. And the other 10% was him thinking he was doing the right thing. He got twisted by the Jailer. I would argue he didn't deserve to go to hell

I mean, as you see in that video, souls can be permanently killed in the Shadowlands. So there's not really a reason to send people to the Maw in the first place.

WoW's story has never been very good, save for Mists of Pandaria

but this shadowlands shit always really felt like a shark jumping moment to me. then again the narrative lead for this game is also apparently a huge fan of GoT season 8 so yeah

They can say that they only thought his soul was gone. But the most miniscule speck held on, and reformed.

And he's not gonna do shit because it turns out the Lich King magic is from the Jailer, they shattered Frostmourne and turned them into two swords for frost dks, and turned the Helm of Domination into a quest green.

To be fair his story was already over. They chose the safe option imo.

I mean, the easiest thing to do here would be to say that when he was the lich King he took a portion of his soul and hid it in an object in case he was ever killed. He's a lich king. Give him a phylactery.

We've killed fragments of his soul like four times, I don't think that will work.

Maybe I've missed a lot, because I haven't been playing Shadowlands, but how is that all that remains of Arthas when the cinematic with Uther showed Uther throw Arthas into that pit?

Are we to assume the jailer took his soul and did something with it offscreen?
