Ron DeSantis is apparently not above scolding high school students to make his, uh, point about Covid-19.
The Florida Republican governor approached a group of students wearing masks who were standing behind a podium at the University of South Florida, where he was scheduled for a news conference Wednesday.
"You do not have to wear those masks. I mean please take them off," DeSantis said to, at first, polite laughter. But he wasn't kidding around.
"Honestly, it's not doing anything. We've gotta stop with this Covid theater. So if you want to wear it, fine. But this is ridiculous," he continued.

He then sighed dramatically and began delivering his remarks.

I hate this man so much. It is precisely people like him that brainwashed half my patients into being convinced it's all a hoax.

That reads like a copypasta. I was sure he'd end it by yawning loudly.

In my opinion, the race for governor this year will be the final word on whether Florida is still a purple state or has now officially become a lost-cause red state.

You know what we still don't know? The long-term effects of a disease that infects the vasculature like covid-19 does. The closest analogous disease that children have is rheumatic fever, which causes severe long-term side effects that aren't known for decades. So obviously the solution is to pretend like children aren't at risk even though we have zero evidence that's the case.

The problem is that there's a whole lot of people who know jack s*** about virology who think that because children have a low mortality rate with covid, it's no big deal for them.

Technically children had low mortality with polio, too.

We are only just now coming to terms with the fact that covid-19 causes serious vascular damage (it literally infects vasculature as its primary target) which is one of the reasons why it causes blood clots in such high numbers.

I'm pro choice on the masking. If you want to wear an n95 (the mask that actually does something), go ahead. I'm PRO mask in hospitals, drug stores, and on airplanes.

I know that after Trump it feels like a foregone conclusion that the Republicans will nominate the absolute worst person for POTUS and he'll win without effort. Trump represents the unfettered personal liberty of being able to get away with all the repugnant things that little cartoon devil on your shoulder tells you to do, but DeathSantis is just another slimy, unlikeable politician with an extra heaping dose of whiny bitch energy.

Right now most of the red-voting country views him from afar as 'that guy in Florida who's owning teh libs,' but I know loyal Trumpists here in Florida who openly despise DeathSantis, because they actually have to live under his dumbassery. So I'm still holding out hope that he'll get crushed when he genuinely has to step out onto the national stage and start attempting to sell himself to the general public.

We just got through the omicron variant, which has been the least deadly variant, and really nothing more than a flu/cold. This is something, in time, you will realize, we will have to live with the rest of our lives, and we must all make calculated decisions. I'm choosing NOT to live in fear. I will wear the mask and do what is necessary around immuno-compromised people (at hospitals and other areas like that; nursing home, etc).
If I'm in a large grocery store, I'm out. If you're scared, then you wear the n95 or order your groceries online. We're done. The rest of us have to live our lives and make calculated decisions like we do every single day we get in our cars and take a chance we'll get into an accident.

If you strip away all the posturing and politics, I guarantee that the root cause of all this is that certain demographics of this country are in deep denial over the state of the world, and cannot bring themselves to admit that both the United States and their precious way of life is vulnerable to change and disruption. I guarantee that most of them remember the first SARs - and the constant footage of Asian crowds all masked up - and thought to themselves 'boy, I sure am glad nothing like that ever happens in America!' So every time such people see someone else wearing a mask, it's a sore reminder that yes, those kinds of things can happen in America, and will continue happening in America as we go further into the 21st Century. And they're simply not emotionally equipped to deal with that.

People like Caution absolutely ruined my life for two straight years. Posturing like some kind of badass when in reality he's just an irresponsible asshole who leaves a mess and then blames the person cleaning it up for inconveniencing him.
