Ddog is so op he almost makes the other buddies irrelevant. But Quiet on the .50 cal is an experience.

Your criticisms are valid but it is a great game and worth a play. The costs on high level equipment are absolutely insane though. Also the multiplayer was fun

Too bad it was rushed by Konami. It wasn't finished but they released it because Kojima was "taking too long".
It would've been a generational master piece if he was allowed to finish it.

+ GOAT third-person gameplay
+ a couple of powerful moments
+ good soundtrack
+ good visuals
- boring, incomplete story
- two-dimensional characters (this is common for Kojima, though)
- repetitive mission structure
- poorly implemented, unnecessary open-world
- outside of mission 43, Mother Base was lame

+++ no trash ass Otacon

I enjoyed it, mostly because the gameplay/controls are so damn good. Things I didn't like:

  • - trash-ass real-time development costs to sell some stupid-ass microtransactions. You need the entire GDP of Liechenstein just to develop a camera upgrade and have to spend hours fultoning cargo containers to cover other costs.
  • Mother base sucks, too. It's basically visiting, taking a shower, getting back in the helicopter, rinse (literally) and repeat. Other than a few funny scenes -- like Ocelot telling Snake he reeked, or Quiet lighting Snake's cigar with a bullet -- I didn't really want to hang out here.
  • - story feels incomplete
  • - Kiefer barely has any lines
  • - Huey is really annoying
  • - penalized for killing people, which is part of the fun of screwing around with lethal weapons. This even carried over into Death Stranding, which was also kinda annoying. Oh well...beanbag shotguns again, I guess...yay.

From just a gameplay perspective it's one of the better ones, though it didn't need 2 fairly big open world areas. If there were bigger outposts and actual convoys, along with soldier patrols throughout the maps it would have been so much better.

Storywise it's absolute trash.

Previous MGS games were layer upon layer of conspiracies, the entire plot being recontextualised constantly throughout the game. MGSV has nothing happen for 30 hours then code talker explains the entire plot through an audiotape. Terrible.

I think what really baffles me is that GZ had more mission variety then PP ended up having for it's side quests. I don't get why they weren't also put in the base game outside of it being released too early.

Flawed masterpiece that unravelled the further you played, hampered by its cancellation and enforced crunch but arguably a victim of its own success because so much money and time went into developing both the FOX Engine and MGSV proper.

When the game works, it's one of the best stealth games ever made. It truly nailed open-world stealth. That doesn't excuse it for literally being unfinished, leaving plot points on the cutting room floor that had to be elaborated on in special features including the final story mission of the game and a whole third playable area, and finishing with a lazy and pandering plot twist in a series known for heady, convoluted plot twists in the context of an ever-deepening political conspiracy.

It's understandable why the game ended the way it did, a deadline was enforced at a point where the team literally had to staple the game shut at the end and ship it. The parts of the game that benefit from the most care and polish are excellent. But because of how the development cycle ended, the whole product will always be compromised, and that's a shame.
