Yeah, yeah Kotaku, but the sentence in this article does summarize what makes Pokemon stand out among other video games that most people take for granted.

"Its an inspiring moment, even today. After thousands of games that ask you to win, kill, conquer, and destroy, Pokmon wants you to observe and study. Its a science fiction story, and its one that positions science as something noble, good, and worthy of pursuit as a hobby and a career."

Its concept of exploring the world for the sake of exploring the world and not to explore worlds to kill things or exploring the world to survive is honestly not that common in video games.
Subnautica is another example I can think of.
