(CNN) - Former Vice President Mike Pence, who always looks like he's about to introduce legislation banning the X-Men, on Friday condemned Republican "apologists" who have used positive language to describe Russian President Vladimir Putin amid his invasion of Ukraine, according to a source who was in the room as Pence spoke to top GOP donors.
"There is no room in this party for apologists for Putin. There is only room for champions of freedom," Pence said. The line received applause from donors who were gathered for a Republican National Committee retreat in New Orleans, the source said. The event was closed to the press.
Pence's speech came just days after former President Donald Trump described Putin as "genius" and "savvy" for launching a full-scale invasion in Ukraine, where civilian casualties continue to pile up despite global condemnation of the Russian leader's actions.
According to his prepared remarks, which the source said he did not deviate from Friday, Pence called on the Biden administration to take stronger actions against Russia, including sanctions on the country's oil exports.
"Putin only understands strength. As members of the party that won the Cold War, we must send a deafening message: Putin must stop or Putin must pay," Pence said.
"We must demand this administration increases military spending immediately, (arms) Ukraine with lethal weapons to counter Russian armor and aircraft and President (Joe) Biden should sanction all Russian oil exports worldwide," Pence said.
During his appearance at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference last weekend, Trump doubled down on complimenting the Russian President.
"Yesterday, reporters asked me if I thought President Putin is smart. I said, 'Of course, he's smart,'" Trump told the crowd in Orlando, Florida.
In another thinly veiled swipe at Trump, who remains fixated on false claims about fraud in the 2020 presidential election, Pence, according to excerpts of his speech, encouraged Republicans to stop "relitigating the past."
"We cannot win by fighting yesterday's battles," he said. "Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, let's press on toward the goal."

God damn. Don't get me wrong I find a lot of his views repugnant, but I sure do respect him for his actions on 1/6 and now calling out Trump's cult and refusing to buy into their bullshit. I also like how he can conduct himself like a goddamn adult and not take constant shots at Biden. Honestly we need more politicians who conduct themselves like Pence, the guy at least has respect for the office and seems to take the job seriously. Hopefully more Republicans can grow tf up and start doing the right thing instead of pandering to our dumbest voters who let irrational fear guide their vote.

But to be honest "Let's just forget about Trump and the Jan 6th stuff." is kind of pathetic.

Sure don't live in the past but you can't just ignore what your party did openly and supported openly without any kind of apology or change.

Ah, I thought you weren't allowed to directly copy/paste articles here and had to change something or it gets deleted. I saw a "why was my topic deleted" topic years ago and that was a mods response. Tbf mods here do whatever they want with no consistency so it doesn't matter I suppose lol

i don't remember that rule in particular, but it was a nono for a while to just copy/paste an entire article. we could only post the beginnings and then had to link to the rest of it. eventually, though, blood was everywhere, and they relented.
