I just started and tried to attack him but he killed me almost instantly

Yeah you want to avoid him for a little while. Then come back and wreck him.

But is it possible to beat him at this point?

Yeah. Once you get the horse, Torrent, you can challenge him on somewhat better footing, but he'll likely kill you in 2 hits until you've leveled up a bit. It's good practice for fighting on horseback though, which will help you overwhelm general overworld enemies.

Weeks? My current file is like 1 week old and I beat him within 20 minutes of starting.

You can beat him by memorising his pattern as soon as you meet him, or you can level up and beat him to a bloody pulp later

whichever sounds more fun to you

I beat him after just starting the game. Took all day to learn his pattern but it's doable.

Yeah, he teaches the player an early lesson that you will find tough challenges but you have options and they can be avoided if you prefer, or you can throw yourself against the wall and find theyre still not impossible.

I think you mean wait until you meet the dragon shield, lignthning spewing version.

it really pisses me off that i was able to beat the dragon from that swampy area but i still havent been able to beat this motherfucker. lol

Don't be too mad. The dragon is big and scary, but he's really easy (by this game's standards). He's slow, predictable, and has one attack that leaves him open and defenseless for a long period of time.

Every souls game has that tutorial enemy that wrecks you the first time through.

But they can always be beaten and you will encounter them again later on more often than not.

Usually the gimmick is that if you can beat them while you are just starting, you get a unique item or tons of souls compared to when you fight them again.

The knight guy is great practice for horseback fighting. The weapon also isn't bad but you need a lot of stats for it.

This. It's cheap and cowardly but FromSoft rewards players to "return" the favor towards those jerks they designed.

I wouldnt call it cheap and cowardly, but Im a melee/faith build. Timing the heavy charged attacks to hit another enemy who is also on horseback takes lots of practice and deaths.
