Rewatching the NuTrek movies and its shocking how stupid the script is for Into Darkness. Im curious to know how people can say this is the best one.

And to clarify, Id rather watch Into Darkness over movies like Generations or Nemesis because it looks amazing and the action is well done. But its the worst Star Trek story of them all for me.

Honestly when I watched it in theaters, I didn't mind it that much, but after the theater experience simmered a bit, I now realize how shitty of a movie it truly was.

I was also tricked by the fact that it referenced The Wrath of Khan without realizing how much of the point of the original it lost along the way.

This criticism never really made sense to me, because it seems like Khan and the Eugenics Wars would be mandatory topics of education. They would know who Khan was, or at the very least would be at least vaguely familiar with the name.

What? That makes no sense to what is happening in the film.

Nobody in the movie has any clue who Khan is. The film makes it clear that Khan isn't just isolated and just arisen so he wouldn't know that people don't know who he is. The scene is an absurd fourth wall break for no purpose other than making an omniscient audience go "oh shit"

The film is incredibly fucking dumb. I remember people actually crying in the theater when you know who "died" and I was so confused because apparently I was the only one who remembered Bones injecting Khan's blood into a dead tribble for no fucking reason at all other than to obviously set up what was about to happen.

Yeah, all this. The Khan thing was blatant pandering fanservice 4th wall breaking garbage-- Cumberbatch said it basically right to the audience.

And the death/resurrection thing made me roll my eyes in the theater.

Yeah the Star Trek movie where a giant space sausage with a disco ball wreaks havoc on Earth so the crew needs to time travel to 1980s San Francisco to abduct some whales and bring them to the future to communicate with the sausage is probably worse than Into Darkness.

I'm not a movie critic. I liked into darkness. I think that's my favorite of the three. And I'm a star trek fan.

Don't try to disown me and say I'm not a true star trek fan. I loved TOS, watched every episode of TNG, and watched a sizeable amount of DS9 and VOY. I also watched all the TOS movies and TNG ones as well.

I also watched two seasons of DIS (disliked it), and the first season of Picard (disliked it too).

I don't go to conventions, but ST is one of my favorite series of all time, despite some low points.

I tried not to compare the new Trek to the other material and assess it as they were. Maybe I have low standards because I liked them all. Also, the lower the standards the better. That just means I like more movies and I complain less.

As a bit of action spectacle, Into Darkness is okay.

It doesn't hold up to much scrutiny at all ("Lol, I was injecting super soldier blood into dead tribbles for a laugh and I accidentally created life, what am I like?"), and it's easily the worst of the JJ trilogy (Beyond is the best by a long shot, and I'll tear my shirt open Shatner-style and scrap with anyone who disagrees), but I'd take it over Nemesis or The Final Frontier any day.

I dont think Ive ever met someone with this same mindset on here. Life is just so much more fun and enjoyable when you like more movies/games/music etc than everyone else, rather than hating and complaining all the time.

Into Darkness is the most enjoyable of the trilogy and definitely my favorite, haters be damned.

Thats pretty much the only thing it has going for it.

Id probably be more forgiving if it didnt shove in the Wrath of Khan references and just made Cumberbatch a new character. And if they took out the stupid fake Kirk sacrifice just for him to be brought back to life 2 minutes later by Khans magic blood.

But as much as I complain about it, I cant bring myself to hate it because its a very well executed action movie.

JJ Trek isn't real trek. JJ made a single good decision which was to set it in a different timeline. This spared the prime timeline from being destroyed until STD and Picard trashed it, but it was likely just done because JJ doesn't know how to respect continuity.

The only of the JJ films that isn't trash is Beyond, and this is because it was written by Simon Pegg, who unlike JJ actually 1. Is a good writer and 2. Actually cares about trek (the movie references both the MACOs and the Xindi, those are some deep cuts).

The real tragedy of it though is that just like on things like Game of Thrones, there are so many talented people working on it who do care, but because the most important element, the writing, isn't respected, all the rest of the talent is wasted.

The soundtrack done by Michael Giacchino, for example, is fucking awesome:
https://youtu.be/XfP6o-61e2s

That's the best score Trek has had since First Contact, but it's totally wasted in service of an absolute garbage film.

Star Trek Into Darkness is better then The Wrath of Khan.

Yes I said it.

And yes I will fight you.

Wrath of Kahn was fucking awful. It should have been called the Wrath of Overacting. Not to mention the character in general was just terrible. At no point did it feel like he was ever a threat to anyone except a convienence store's no shirt no service policy. At least Into Darkness actually showed him as being genetically superior unlike the joke that was his episode in the original series.
