So this is a contest I've wanted to do for a while now, but it's been tricky because, of course, there will be potential spoilers galore. This will be a contest about which fictional deaths are the coolest, most brutal, most satisfying, etc. (rather than strictly about the best character that died)

A few rules to help:

1. Because spoilers are already gonna be enough of a worry, no nominations from anything released 2021 or later.
2. For now each person can nominate up to 10 deaths.
3. PLEASE censor the character(s) but include the source material they are from uncensored.
4. You can double one nomination by bolding it.
5. Three nominations will secure a spot in the competition.

Clarification on what is considered a "death"

• If a character disappears in a way that they cannot come back from, or that they no longer have any sentience of their own, it counts as a death. This includes things like characters being erased from existence, made to have been never born, possessed in a way that destroys the mind/soul of the host, becoming a zombie, etc. This does NOT include a character driving away and not showing up again.
• Multiple characters can be included in one nomination if their deaths happen simultaneously and in the same situation (ie. explosions). But if their deaths happen at the same event, but in separate ways (ex. Final Destination beginnings) count them separately.
• A character death will still be considered valid if they are later reincarnated, reborn, etc. so long as the death was itself legitimate.
• Please keep it to confirmed deaths. It's technically ok if the death technically happens offscreen, but try to avoid situation of "character's fate is unclear and never resolved"
• If a character dies a bunch of times for some reason (like one of those branching reality games or whatever) please specify one time.

I considered that, and maybe that'll end up being what happens if this fails, but the downside of that is that with a ranking the emotional impact of a death is lost if the ranker isn't specifically familiar with the source material

The ending related to him outright shows he survives the event horizon he creates with his ship as it transported him to a planet the main cast visits. Narratively, he's dead. A secret ending shows otherwise.

TECHNICALLY, his death is outright seen and narratively considered legitimate with no questions unresolved. Everyone acknowledges that a guy who flies straight into a plasma space dragon and triggers an inescapable black hole is in fact, DEAD. Also TECHNICALLY, he gets a "happy ending" where he doesn't actually die but barely survives and is transported to an ancient planet as a piece of a prophecy unexplored, but that's an ending with a large number of hoops to jump through to even trigger it.

TL;DR: Narratively, he's KIA. No questions, no suspicions, no but maybes. At the same time, a secret ending reveals something else. Do you consider a secret ending as invalidating the main narrative when the main cast will NEVER know he actually cheated death by a miracle?

I would probably lean against including that one

so it's not so much a matter of him dying and then later coming back, or of him dying and it later being retconned. From the way you describe it, and from what I can tell reading up, it was a case of his fate being left unsure, only for the true ending to reveal that, against the thoughts of many, he actually survived. That's an entire trope to itself, really.

The thing is, that secret ending is canon as shown in Star Ocean 1 where you get Crowe's laser swords near the end of the game, and there's no other way that they could've gotten there if he didn't end up on Roak. So it falls under rule 1, since he was never dead even if you don't get that ending.

I suppose Takahata's metaphorical intentions seeped into mind when I made this selection, though it seems this character perhaps doesn't strictly, in the classical sense, die. That said - and with the caveat that its been some time since I saw the film - my recollection is that even on the literal level: beyond merely removing her memories, the moon people were putting an end to her human life and bringing Kaguya back to her celestial state of being - a form of Ascending to a Higher Plane of Existence, which overlaps with Johnbobb's "disappears in a way they cannot come back from" clause. Nevertheless, if I am mistaken about that, I am mistaken, and given the examples Johnbobb elaborates with, I am going to assume it does not meet the spirit of his criterion, anyway. I will retract this nomination.
