wrong time to do it. my hour was yeeted into the void of spring ahead. we must be made whole by the holy promise of fall back before we close the doors of time.

But yeah, really though, ending this dumb practice would be great.

I would rather get rid of Daylight Wasting Time. It's nicer on the summer to have the light later, so why don't we get the light later in the winter too? It's good when you're tired at the end of the day.

End the practice, but make it so it's not light at 4 am in summer. That's why winter time is called "Wasting Time."

As a mail carrier, more daylight in the evening during the holidays would be great and darkness at 4:30 is depressing, so let's just keep it as it is right now.

Topic title is wrong. It's making DST permanent. "Standard" time (which is actually shorter in the year) would be done away with (winter months).

Good. We should start calling it Daylight Losing Time in the mean time until they abolish it.

Would be wonderful if this gets passed because Canada would follow suit to not be confusing when you go south of the border and all of a sudden it's a different time.

And Lord knows Canada could use more sunshine.

wouldn't canada be impacted even worse by the issues that make DST necessary to begin with? I kinda imagined the reason this ever gets traction in the US is that so much of the US is far enough south that it doesn't hurt as badly

The world is a different place now.

It will certainly suck when the sun doesn't rise until 8:30 during some of the short winter days but I still think it's better having evening daylight.

People are mad that 1 day of the year is 1 hour shorter so they start brigading against the thing that causes the time change, which just so happens to be a practice that improves the quality of 8 full months.

I think I figured out the real problem. We all want the day to have about 16 hours of daylight. But since it just doesn't have that much, we all fight over whether morning people or night people should get more of the light. What we need to do is build another sun so everyone get enough light.

what if i just want us to follow normal time because i'm a bit ocd about it

Still though, whatever, picking one and sticking with it is better than this monstrosity forced upon us so I'd just deal.

Instead of depressing darkness at 5pm in Canada in say, December, there's more light for kids to play out in snow or whatever.

It would be darker in mornings, but if you're going to get up to start the school/work day, I don't really care about getting extra sunlight in the morning.

But we are changing to the method that benefits those 8 months. This isn't ending DST, it's making DST permanent.

As an AZ resident I havent dealt with this in 20 years.

Does this mean the other 48 states would follow AZ/HI or that these 2 would fall in line with the other 48?

AZ and Hawaii currently are on permanent standard time (for the most part.) Per Reuters, this bill would let them stay that way.

No, the change itself is the problem. It has a temporary negative psychological effect.

ignoring that i was wrong about which direction this cuts, this argument clearly misses the point - on the one day, there's the psychological effects caused by the change. On the months in between the change, there is an impact on driving conditions which you would imagine impacts road safety.

If you look at the article above (about the time in the 70s) - accidents went up ~10% in the mornings and down by more than that in the afternoons, so it all balanced out.

The psychological effect also impacts more than a single day. It can take me a few weeks to suddenly adjust to having to sleep an hour earlier. And I'm pretty sure being tired while driving in the morning is comparatively dangerous to it being a bit darker.

I believe the argument is that more accidents occur by having it get dark earlier in the evening than the amount that happens if it gets light later in the morning, so they want to do away with the whole "dark earlier in the evening" bit.

Like somebody said, accidents did go up in the morning, but they decreased by a higher amount in the evening, so it was a net positive.

You wouldn't be making DST permanent, because that doesn't make any sense. You would be shifting every state that observes DST one hour ahead and eliminating DST (e.g. ET is now UTC-04:00 instead of UTC-05:00)
