Cute kitty but I've never understood keeping cats on a leash.

if he wants to go outside, he must be tethered

otherwise i will not let him outside

They kill other animals when allowed to wander, or can be killed by other animals, or hit by cars, etc. My cats are all indoor cats.

Basically everywhere but the states lets their cats out, it's normal for cats to kill things and they're generally smart enough not to jump in the road.

In the world, many countries have both indoor and outdoor cats. And the US has plenty of people who have outdoor cats. Though, according to studies, many outdoor cats have an average lifespan of only 2-5 years. They can live longer. But that was the average. Where I for cats have an average of 10-15 years (another source said 13-17, though) For the outdoor cats, thats exclusively outdoors, though. Not sure if indoor was exclusively indoor or not As for the averages, thats all they are. Outdoor cats can easily live longer. Just like how indoor cats can live shorter or longer lives

in this instance, butters is a great example

for the first five or six years of his life, i did just let him go outside whenever he wanted

but i didn't live next to the adjacent road next to the main road in town, or as close as i do to the uptown of the town, the road is busy.

there's also just, a lot more people around, before i lived next to a bigass field, and then farmland, so there wasn't really any threats around, aside from the occasional possum or skunk, but as far as i know, he's never bothered with either animal in a way that he got hurt. he's pretty leery of things.

but yes, i decided that, after five or 6 more years of not being able to go outside that i'll allow him to go outside since he still fuckin begs to go outside, but he needs to be leashed to a person

that is actually the second time he's worn the harness, the first time he did the typical shut down thing, and he crawled around and climbed up things to go places, it was pretty funny. he didn't seem stressed out, he still wanted to play and roll around, he just...crawled and jumped. and when i took it off after about a half hour, he still just wanted to roll around and get attention

the second time, which was when i posted this topic, i thought i'd just take him outside with it already. i read that one of the best ways to get a cat used to a harness is to do stuff to get their mind off of it, like giving them treats and playing with them

so if going outside is his goal, then lets just do it. and he walked around just fine. he'd reach the end of the leash and tug at it a bit before going a different direction, sniffing absolutely everything that moved

i was also able to lead him a few times, but i had to tug and pull him around so he would see that we were going to move. he always did follow me around when i did stuff outside and he was outside, so it wasn't too different than that, it's just that he doesn't know this specific outside besides what he can see looking out the windows

I don't believe I've ever said this. What I do think is cats are outdoor animals but they still live with the owner. The only exception for keeping a cat a indoor cat to me is for medical reasons. Also in England I've literally never seen anyone walk a cat on a leash.

Yes it is in a cats natural instinct to hunt. As for getting killed by things. They can get killed by things in your home too.

Why are people getting so offended by me stating simple facts, lol? I don't want my pet to die, or kill other local animals, or develop some sort of paraste or illness from killing other animals, or get hit by a car or ripped to pieces, etc, because that's what happens when you let your pets run loose.

"Natural" sure. That's why you play with your indoor cats, to engage with their natural behaviors without putting them at risk.

Save for killing other animals none of this has happened to any cats I've owned. My last cat lived around 15 years so he had a good run. I'm not saying these things can't happen but things can happen regardless.

Yeah I mean you clearly sit in your home all day playing with your cat to mimic it's natural behaviour but most folk will be out doing things. With a outdoor cat you can still play with it though it's just you won't need to babysit it whenever its instincts kick in.

1 cat to coyotes, 2 to raccoons, 2 to owls, 1 to neighbors who didn't like that we took in their kid who they kicked out of their house, 1 to a car, 1 to neighbor dogs. We've had a lot of cats over the years, and after a while you get tired of losing them to avoidable bullshit.

Then why bother having them? We get owls and plenty of dogs but generally cats are smart enough to avoid danger. Hell one young cat had kittens in our garden and stayed there for a while. We eventually got them to a more safe place though when we found them.

Seems like outdoor cats have the best of both worlds. When our cats came in to eat and sleep I showed them some love. However they enjoyed nothing more than being outside trying toi catch the birds and mating. We have quite a few cats around our area that are all outdoors. My next door neighbour actually lets there Rabbits roam free too. The cats don't bother with them.

Ah, I should probably note that I have a job, since you seem to think I don't for some reason. Kind of strange since I know I've talked about stuff that's happened at my workplace before.

I don't have cats anymore but when I did yeah I let them live naturally, outside doing cat things. I admit I've never sat down and asked a cat if they enjoy sex though. I just assume they do as you know they do it a lot.

I heard that sex is painful for them. They do it basically because they need to. I think its the hormones that basically make them need to mate or whatever

I really don't understand why people seem to idealize "natural" things, but maybe that's because I wear glasses.. and clothes... and play video games... and use the computer... and put unnatural collars on my cats and feed them unnatural kibble and canned food and give them unnatural cat toys and take them to unnatural vet visits...

Whether something is "nautral" or not is completely neutral. It has not bearing on whether or not it's "good." I dunno. Just seems like an odd thing to fixate on.

It's simple to understand. Natural is better than fake in general. Even more so when it comes to animals. Humans applying human concepts to animals is always a strange thing to me. If anything humans are more obsessed with fake things. It's sad really.

I dont think natural is necessarily better just because its natural. I mean, animals can live longer while still being healthy because of vet visits, which arent natural. And with doctors, who arent natural, human can lives longer lives. And have a higher chance of infants surviving until adulthood, which use to be a real problem. Lots of things that are unnatural are good, in many cases

Raccoons can grip things with their front paws. Even solo, they can be dangerous to other animals- they are omnivores- but in groups? We used to live across the street from a big-ass oak tree when I was... between the age of 2 and 9? and 3 raccoons lived in it. They were really big, like... hmm... maybe 3x the size of your average cat? I thought they were cool right up to the point they murdered some of our cats.

Well, even if I didn't want to have designated feed times, one of my cats has hypothyroidism and one of them has hyperthyroidism, so... their food intake needs to be manually managed. Since cats are obligate carnivores and play replicates hunting, it's healthy for them to engage in play, then be fed.
