It depends on how you view it
In r/g/b/y you had silph co and safari as the two biggest time wasters in the entire game.
The lack of a sliph co and safari as being mandatory helps knock down most of the game length of g/s/c/

They were limited by the Gameboy. Its a small miracle they managed to fit in as much stuff as they did.

Kind of wish that wed get another Johto game that reimagines the region into something more fleshed out. >_>

Not exactly. Kanto lost a lot of its content and mostly existed in the form of the long stretches of straight routes. For instance, Viridian Forest was just replaced by a couple of shrubs and Mt. Moon was only one floor. Overall in terms of playable area G/S had about as much as Gen 1 did, it just felt more grand because of the "wow factor" of going to Kanto. They made the game feel longer by having you spend substantially more time in caves and the like, hence why the whole Zubat meme became a real thing.

They actually werent limited
they had too much space left over so added in Kanto

The issue that the first set of games had a forced fucking maze with teleporters tho the trick is you only need to use one teleporter ever
g/s/c was much more liberal in making most of that side content. Same with seafom islands basically being optional but pushed heavily as the way to progress and then oh hey presto you could have just gone there from pallet town

all in r/b/g/y is just 'long' due to poor pacing and purposely forcing you to double back quite often.

It's not really that short IMO. it's slightly smaller than kanto but not by much. It takes about 80% as long to play through as kanto. Kanto is neutered in GSC so it takes about 30-40% as long to complete as it did before (unless you skip all the trainers and content)

Then you also add in the new content outside of maingame Johto, like the route connecting Johto to Kanto, and Mt Silver and the route leading to it.

if you play HeartGold/SoulSilver Kanto is much more fleshed out and has all its dungeons and forests back, plus johto is expanded

In any case it's still easily bigger than Galar.

I liked having a whole second region. It'd be weird not to. I used to talk to everyone repeatedly and examine everything though so maybe there's much less there for someone who doesn't care about seeing how things have progressed after a few years in Kanto.

It always bugged me that the Unknown Dungeon was straight up gone, Viridian Forest felt off too but I enjoy the aesthetic of destroyed Cinnabar Island with downtrodden Gary Oak skulking about and reminiscing.
