you mean like animals that also exist on earth?

that would certainly cause me to reconsider everything.

No, alien animals. They would be new species. But just beasts. Not capable of speech or civilization or anything humanlike

Or what if we only find microscopic organisms like bacteria? Even a bigger letdown than finding animals

Thats most likely the scenario.
They found us and they farm us in earth, where we are picked for them to eat.

Can we be, like 500% sure when we label these creatures as "animals" we make sure they're in their mature form -- and we just haven't discovered the equivalent of a Nursery Planet, before we do anything?

Even finding alien bacteria would be the largest scientific discovery possibly every. Complex animals would be amazing. If we never discover other intelligent life it makes our future look even brighter since it mean that hopefully the great filters are behind us.

I'm still not fully convinced of other intelligent life out there. I know, I know, there are a ton of planets, and certain models that determined there most likely is... but I also question if we truly understand the full complexities of what it takes to make not just an animal, but a human.

The laws of physics are constant throughout the universe, which means that if macroscopic life were ever discovered on another planet that it would likely look similar to life on Earth at some point in its history. Given that the cognitive niche has only existed for a few million years, we are less likely to discover something analogous to humans or our immediate ancestors.

Also, TC, humans are animals.

It would take about a million years to colonize the entire galaxy. If they go through a million planets at the start, and it's all non-intelligent life, they'd only be going through .001% of all the stars in the galaxy, assuming one planet per star.

So, it would only mean that, although intelligent life is rarer, we simply haven't found them yet.
