In regards to works of fiction, I mean.

  • The humans not only win, but most of the characters make it through the conflict no worse for wear, and are able to happily continue their lives afterwards.
  • The humans win, but they suffer heavy losses on their side, and will be feeling the effects in one way or another from the conflict for years to come, if not for the rest of their lives.
  • No matter how hard they fought, in the end, the humans and/or the forces of Earth are defeated, as mere humans cannot stand up against such powerful cosmic entities.

No consequences to humans kinda undermines the eldritch abomination angle, IMO.

If it were to happen they'd have to some notably small fry entity against a trained force, with at least strong hints/implications that if it were any worse it'd be an obvious problem, and also that "worse" is coming. Humanity doesn't just get to escape this stuff.
