This one was NOT in favour of Liu Bei, at all, heh - claiming he lost pretty much every battle and fled at every turn and just somehow dumb lucked his way to head of the west, declared himself emperor for no reason, then died.

...

I didn't know this period had such divisive opinions

Even the ones in favor of Liu Bei say that he didn't have any talent. He just had a heart of gold and very competent people around him.

What about Cao Pi

This one didn't mention him much since it ended with the death of Lui Bei and they only fought like once...

It didn't mention when Cao Cao died, just that he did and then it moved on... nice footnote bruh :D

So it was an accurate one, then.

Liu Bei was kind of a putz. The only reason you tend to think of him as the hero and Cao Cao as the villain is because Romance of the Three Kingdoms was written from that perspective. But it was historical fiction for a reason. And even at the time it came out people acknowledged that it was full of shit in a lot of ways. Not least because it was written more than a thousand years after the events in question.

It mostly depends on who is written the account and when. Early accounts tended to be much more sympathetic to Cao Cao because Wei is the kingdom that ultimately went on to become the core of the next dynasty. Though more under the influence of Sima Yi's family than Cao Cao's (and the Sima later outright usurped the throne).

The same is true now, though - you can read plenty of novels where historical figures are presented either more sympathetically or more outright evil than they actually were in the real world, whether you're reading about Ancient Rome, The Crusades, or even War of the Roses/Tudor/Victorian England.

Imagine someone today who knows nothing about history, and who is forming their opinions of historical figures entirely from playing the Assassin's Creed games.

given how many people were assassinated an Assassin's Creed Three Kingdoms game would be pretty cool... (unless that exists already, I haven't played one since Revelations)

Better Assassin's Creed than the Fate series.

Liu Bei's kindness was greatly exaggerated due to history treating him extremely favorably after the fact, partially due to RotTK. He just lucked out with extremely competent personnel.

I don't recall where I heard it but basically the only reason he is apparently remembered fondly is because he is spoken of well in the romance of the three kingdoms story. In reality he was basically a dick who just repeatedly lost and betrayed his family members stealing their land when they tried to be nice to him.

RotTK guy was a MASSIVE Shu simp yeah, which is also why Zhuge Liang is remembered for literally performing magic and doing everything nearly perfectly

To off set this, Destiny of an Emperor has Si Ma Yi actually use thunder magic and you have to do an off-brand Konami Code to dodge it

I would guess for the same reason as Destiny of an Emperor, because they're "early" characters

Sima Yi was portrayed as almost equal to but just beneath Zhuge Liang, and only truly won the war because Zhuge Liang succumbed to disease. I think it was stated that in RotTK somewhere that if Zhuge Liang had never existed, Sima Yi would have been as renowned as Zhuge Liang was.
