Neither am I, but I will say, on an amusing note, a couple of my co-workers, who are from Vietnam, have joked about everyone in our department wearing a similar dress, in red. Yes, that includes me. I told them we'd probably still have to wear pants underneath. xD

What makes the dress Vietnamese? Like, if one one person were to say it is and another were to say it isn't, what about the dress would decide that?

What makes it their cultural clothing? Many cultures have dresses. What is the difference between wearing this dress provocatively and wearing a different dress provocatively?

.. Because they created the style? It's cultural to them? It's not just a dress, it's a cultural style created historically in their country. The difference is whether or not the country views the garment as important or sacred. It's not that hard to understand.

Actually, it is. There's a fundamental concept here that I'm just not getting. The article describes it as a "gown with slits on the sides". Are these unusual features for a dress? Does no other country have a gown with slits on the sides?

You think it's only the design of the dress with a slit that makes it cultural? That's kinda sad. I know the joke is that white people have no culture but to literally not understand it is a joke.

That is how the article described the style. You indicated it was cultural because "they created the style".

Hard agree.

It's fine to be ignorant. It's plain dumb to be ignorant and then go, "WHY IS THE SEXUALIZATION OF THIS CULTURE'S TRADITIONAL CLOTHING OFFENSIVE?!" And then try to say it's not their clothing because dresses with slits exist.

I mean, the model acknowledged and apologized for what she did. She's not playing dumb and trying to pretend she wasn't wearing it or not in Vietnam when she took the picture.

Also, for transparency, I am Vietnamese American. My sisters and relatives wore these at weddings and during lunar new year. There's pants that go with the "dress" (called an Ao Dai, which literally translates to "long shirt"). If the model had worn the pants too, the picture would've been fine.

Initially it was because you made a point and I wanted to better understand something you said about it. Although, from your post it sounded like you had a better understanding of their perceptive than anyone else in the topic. Without knowing the nationality of any users you do seem like the best person to ask.

Maybe I wasn't clear about the question. How would you identify something as a Hanbok or as a kimono? I'm not arguing that they are or aren't. Imagining that the woman in the story bought the dress in a store, how was she to identify it as a culturally significant dress and not just a regular dress that the store sells?
