Follow up question: do you think your state is the best one? If not, what is the best state?

i live in Jersey and I love it, but I know we arent the best state. I firmly believe top 5 though. Wish it were cheaper.

Let me tell you it kicks ass not having to pump my own gas

Looks like we swapped places!

I like CA besides the cost of living and, in recent years, the few weeks of constant smoke. I liked living in VA a lot too, though. Both high tier states.

I love the sheer audacity of making a topic that deliberately excludes non-North American B8ers at the peak time for non-North American users despite the fact that nearly every country in the world has some sort of regional divisions and quite a few are divided into states too lol.

I live in a nation that refers to itself as a state and its alright except for healthcare (getting better) and public transport (lol no chance). The province is nice but expensive.

Ohio. There is a lot of suburbia, a few cities that I really like, and Athens which is probably the best singular place in the US. Hills in southeast Ohio area beautiful. Kings Island and Cedar Point.

If it wasn't for the politics, I think I'd rank it quite high.

Ontario... it's kinda alright. I'm in a suburb of the GTA though and it's a real NIMBY paradise which sucks, but it's a decisive region that teeters around good and bad choices that lead to rather shitty provincial governance. Love when I go in the city, but obviously shit's expensive and unsustainable, which is creeping further into suburbs like mine. Transit in the city's obviously great, but so is the broader regional transit (GO), at least within the GTA.

Sadly the way things are even my dad is being priced out of our hometown since he's a renter, if he ever gives up this place he's been locked in for years there'll be nothing to afford again. My mom's doing fine but she's very much one of those NIMBY liberals who wanna profit off the dire living conditions of today.

Yeah, this.

Indiana sucks.
Kentucky sucks.

Pennsylvania I'm sure has redeemable qualities and might be better, but I'd prefer any of the big 3 cities to Pittsburgh.

Michigan is colder probably

Lived in Wisconsin almost my whole life and see no reason to move.
  • Politics are bipartisan instead of dominated by one group of idiots or the other
  • Taxes are low - a 5.5% sales tax is pretty nifty and income tax isn't terrible
  • We have a state appetizer of fried cheese curds, which is pretty distinctive
  • The food in general is pretty great (including our local fast food places)
  • There are plenty of beautiful places and buildings to see if you know where to look
  • The Packers and Badgers (in football, women's volleyball, and men's basketball) have been phenomenal for the last 30 years, and the Bucks are finally good. For those who care about sportsball, anyway.
  • We aren't skipped over for concerts or tours, though in some cases going to Chicago is required
One issue is the ice in winter. I don't mind the snow or cold, just the slippery roads and sidewalks. And also polar vortexes when we get them. The other issue is that though the people present themselves as hospitable, there's an underlying xenophobia (especially in my area). I don't mind. I'm an introvert.

I'm still a Jersey boy at heart (central) but moved to Ohio.

I... like my area, but I'm not a fan of the state itself for three things.

First, the weather. I love the cold, but I absolutely despise this time of year where it zigzags so much between temperatures and pressures that my sinus-problem-for-life head can't keep up.

Second, the food. Ohio veggies and fish are fine but pale to NJ's. Most of the restaurant food is fried in some way, and I'm fat enough, thanks. And good lord the baking sucks- I grew up near two amazing bakeries - one Jewish, one Italian - and I had to learn to bake for myself because most everything baked is such crap in comparison around here. I miss good salt bagels, and the only decent baked thing I've had around that I didn't make is a sour cream doughnut. Which, again, fried/fatty.

Third, geography. I miss being able to drive ten minutes and be riverside, or twenty another direction and be at the beach, or ten south to be in the pine lands, or thirty north and in the mountains. Nay, I drive 45 minutes in any direction here and it's just plains. Pass.

Florida and its fine. No state income tax, decent sales tax. Bright futures means any competent student can go to in-state college for relatively little. Plenty of theme parks and amusement parks (Universal studios is probably the best overall, but the 4 Disney parks and busch gardens are all decent too). And water parks as well.

Decent weather, a little too hot in the summer but never gets really bad, no snow to deal with so maintaining a cars a lot easier. Decent selection of cruises go out of florida as well if you like that kind of thing (I enjoy one once in a while)

Only real complaint is food isn't amazing, but we are starting to get more good options and we have most types of food covered at least.

I'm glad to be back in Michigan. I don't think too many people would say it's the best state, but it is maybe among the most underrated. It's got cities worth visiting all over the state from Detroit (obviously), Grand Rapids, Traverse City, Ann Arbor, Saginaw, etc. but we've also got a boatload of nature to check out. The Great Lakes are one thing, but the woodlands in the heart of the mitten and of the Upper Peninsula, and even the porcupine mountains. The weather isn't anything special, but you really get a taste of every season.

I'm probably opining a bit much about Michigan because I just came back here after living three years in Ohio. It sucked. I hated most every minute there. Now that I'm back, and in one of the most highly regarded cities in America no less, I'm thrilled.

Massachusetts is pretty good I suppose. Politically one of the better ones, although I think the elected officials are generally a couple notches below what the popular sentiment seems to be. I guess that's the downside of being a long-term Democratic stronghold. You don't have to deal with many right-wing nutjobs in power, but Establishment Democrats are pretty entrenched. Not a ton of forward-thinking leaders.

Also could be better on racial diversity, New England in general is pretty white, especially outside larger cities.
