It's easily between that, 4, and 5. Great new cast of characters, incredible ending, and adds so much to the story.

Rogue One is the best Disney era film by a long shot that's for sure.

It's a great Star Wars film imo. But still not better than 4-6. And MAYBE not 3 either.

The prequels get a lot of hate, some of it well deserved I'll admit, but they aren't horrible movies either imo.

Its the best if no other Star Wars movies exist.

Ill never understand the boner that people have for this movie, especially Star Wars fans. I mean, it literally checks off everything on the this is why I hate a movie because I think Im a cinephile checklist (bland forgettable characters, unnecessary fan service, female lead, heavy focus on action, weak plot, contradicts the previous Expanded Universe, etc.).

I dont hate it, but my god is it overrated.

Whenever someone says Rogue One (or less commonly, Solo) is the best Star Wars content Disney has put out, I always find that incredibly telling.

It was not a good movie. It was not well-written, and is largely not well directed.

I'm not into star wars but I liked it. Donnie Yen ftw, I absolutely loved his character and what he brought to the movie surrounding the whole mystique of the jedi and the force, something that was sorely lacking when I watched the other star wars.

It's funny though, before star wars 8 I thought star wars was on a path to be entertaining like mcu. I remember watching sw 7 and thinking "I enjoyed that more than I thought I would" and then they followed it up with Rogue One which I actually liked (saw it on a plane fwtw) and I thought the series would keep getting better instead of being the high point before the fall

literally everything that happens prior to the final battle is skippable, the movie farts around way too much and barely gives any reason to care about the characters. It doesn't help that you essentially know how it's going to end from the beginning, making it even harder to care about what's happening for like 80% of the film

The only reason people like Rogue One is the last 10 minutes. Everything before that is so dull. Fanservice carries a average film a long way it seems.

I enjoyed Rogue One. And since it was Star Wars, I graded it less harshly than I usually would. So the flat characters, stupid deaths, etc. didn't bother me so much.

Thing is, they actually felt like real people with realistic foibles and motivations. Which is a bar that no other Star Wars movie has cleared.

The setting felt grounded and lived-in, which only the OT has managed to do. Jedha? Awesome. Scarif? Great. That space station we meet Cassian on? Fuck yeah. I felt like I was watching an actual story play out rather than contrived nonsense.
The whole thing was just...polished. Thought through. I got the impression that the people involved with the film respected me and my time. The story was weak, but I enjoyed the vibe of it enough that I didn't really care.

And of course the final battle was enjoyable. Only bad part was how every member of the main cast died while smiling at an explosion. That was some dumb YA shit.

I assume TC was joking, considering he literally listed the 3 worst parts of the movie like they were positives.

Rogue one is alright, but it has pretty glaring problems.

I found it disappointing myself. It felt like it was an unneeded story just there to put in stuff from the OT that fans can get excited about when they see it. The characters weren't very memorable to me. It also felt like it was made for the certain segment of fans who were clamoring for a darker and grittier SW movie that was more of a war movie itself. That end scene with you know who was a direct gift to those folks. That's just not for me. I probably would have loved it if it came out when I was a tween-teen, but I didn't feel anything from it.

One one hand it seems obvious, but on the other there are people who legit think that way.

It's the "best" of the new crop of shit yes. Sadly it's the least necessary one of all of them, didn't need to be told. A whole movie to explain the rebel plans when a line in the first movie covered it like 40 years ago?

Best Disney Star Wars by a long shot

Everything between the two jail sequences other than the set piece fight should have been cut down to about five minutes

Strong third act though
