So there's this girl at work that I've had a huge crush on for a while. I haven't asked her out, though, because I've been having major self-confidence issues for about a year now (though I did work up enough courage to give her a box of chocolate for Valentine's Day), and even if I DID have the confidence, I no longer have access to a working car, having totaled my car a few weeks by going off the road trying to swerve to avoid a fucking COUCH in the middle of the road. I am looking at several cars I'm interested in, but, seeing as they're used cars, I'm waiting on a grease-monkey cousin of mine to check them out and give me a thumbs-up or down on them before buying one.

Anyways, Girl and I work in the same building, but we're on opposite sides of our work area, and I can't exactly run off and have a conversation with her in the middle of doing our jobs; not only that, she has a later scheduled start time than me, so by the time she comes in, work has already started. As such, I talk to her when I can, IF I can (again, lack of SC), but it's not that often, sadly.

Now, I have a coworker, we'll call him Guy, who often talks to her. Guy has a girlfriend, but I didn't know that at the time. I did notice on at least two occasions that Guy would go to the cafeteria and bring her a small pizza. Obviously, I'm worried I'm missing my chance with Girl, thinking he may ask her out first, so I strike up a casual conversation with Guy during pre-work. I joke with him, saying "Why haven't you asked her out yet?" He tells me he already has a girlfriend. He also knows I have a crush on Girl, as I mentioned it before when we've talked

This is the moment--I didn't realize at the time--I fucked up.

I joke with him saying "So? Maybe you can handle dating 2 girls at once!" We both laugh about it and pre-work ends and we go to our spots. This was last week.

Tonight, he comes to help me finish up and ends up telling me "By the way, I asked her out!"

Say WHAT?!

I just stare at him for a moment before replying "WHAT?! But you have a girlfriend!". He says "Yeah. I'll give this a try and see what happens."

Either he's pulling a damn prank on me, or he's fucking serious. I won't know until tonight. I'm hoping it's just a stupid prank, though the way he said it makes it sound like he's serious.

I'm either fucked, or I dodged a bullet. Either Girl doesn't know he has a girlfriend and will be pissed off and hurt when she finds out (as will his girlfriend if/when she finds out) and I'll be feeling responsible for the pain it causes them because he took the joke seriously, or they both know and are okay with it (in which case it's a weight off my shoulders, as I'm not interested in going after someone who wants an open relationship; I'm looking for something exclusive), OR Girl knows he has a girlfriend and doesn't give a shit while the girlfriend is oblivious to him cheating on her and would be heartbroken about it if/when she finds out (in which case it's still a weight off me, as I will have nothing to do with a woman like that; what's to stop her from cheating on me if we got together?).

Again, if this isn't a prank, I. AM. SCREWED.

you're over thinking, by putting girls on pedestals, you're being all like "oh jeez, what will she think?" when you're around her. just do what i do, and act like you have a dog. then pretend to have the confidence of a dog owner (for real, they have to walk outside holding a bag of poop for the entire world to see), and she'll think "wow, this guy is really comfortable with holding poop, that must mean he's dad material"
and, last but not least (even though i'm only making two (2) points) - don't date coworkers. that's a huge mistake in my experience. now, i have never gotten a reply from a girl on a dating app, so i'm not exactly well-versed in terms of dating. but, what i do know from my younger days of watching coworkers date each other, if they break up, it makes things terrible at work. that drama slithers its way into every aspect of working.
just not worth it.
think of it like seinfeld, when costanza was all freaked out because he didn't want his friends (Jerry, Elaine, Cosmo Kramer) to intermingle with his girlfriend, because "worlds colliding" would be a bad thing.
