So, lawyers of CE, what do. Was at work and received text that I wasnt welcome in the land owners home anymore, no reason given. The months rent is paid and all my belongings are on property. Denied entry to reclaim and locks changed. Indiana if it matters. Dont want to press charges or anything, just want my shit.

problem is knew them before renting. Thought cool people so didnt have issue doing the rent and shit under the table. No official papers

What state? Call the police. You cant be locked out of somewhere without formal eviction. Youve established your residency

Most states define occupancy as someone whos lived there for at least 30 days, even if you didnt have an agreement you can get a police or sherrif escort to get your shit back. And even if you've been there like 2 hours its your property and you can have the police get it back. And dont be stupid, press charges.

A rudimentary Google search says adverse possession (squatters rights) takes 10 years, so yeah kinda sol

There has to be a backstory behind this.

If you had been living there at least 30 days in most states, they'd still have to give you 24-72 hours written notice to be out even if you're not on the lease. Locking you out like that's tantamount to stealing, especially if they already accepted rent. You might not be able to sue but you'd be justified busting the door open to get your stuff.

been two months so 30day threshold met. And will end up doing so if they wont budge on it In morning. In driveway so know not going anywhere with my shit.

Yep. And if it was the landlord themselves you were renting from, well. That's got way more room in your favor than if you'd been subletting a room from a friend who was themselves renting from the landlord.

Press charges immediately don't even send a legal threat just go straight to serving papers

Do you recieve mail there? That's enough to prove you live there un most cases.

Call the police. They will force the landlord to let you back in and get your stuff. Locking you out like that is illegal.

Step one is disregard everyone who mentions "pressing charges" because they have no idea what they're talking about.

not sure why anyone would get authorities involved in getting locked out of their own place that they pay for unless they have a meth lab or something in the house, wat.

Call the cops asap. Since you have been there over 30 days you are a legal occupant. They can end your tenancy, typically with 30 days notice, though that varies by state. You owe rent until your last day, but if you leave then, you will owe nothing further. If you do not vacate, since you have no lease, they will then need to do an ejectment. Those can take up to 6 months. If the ejectment is approved by the court, you will then be responsible for the legal fees and any unpaid rent.

I want to give them the chance to settle this without law involved due to knowing them. Not dumb enough to let out of sight so know belongings not going anywhere. This just caught me out of nowhere. Do appreciate the tips. The 30day residency thing is a nice thing to know if push comes to shove

Fuck them. They did you dirty with an illegal eviction. If they gave a shit about you they would not have handled things the way they did. You owe them no such consideration.

It's not like the police will charge them with a crime, illegal evictions are a civil matter. An officer may begrudgingly show up to at least let you back in but I wouldn't be surprised if they don't want to get involved at all, especially without concrete proof you've been living there.
