Ad breaks or in your fave ads will keep me from ever even looking at a review of the game. Product placement in the game honestly I may even prefer it compared to now. Seeing bottles of coke would be a lot more immersive to me than some off the wall fake brand name

Just free to play games according to the article.

That is fine, you go into those games expecting them to be ad riddled anyways. If it is a full price game though, I better not see an ad unless it is cleverly done (like the Cup-O-Noodles quest in FFXV).

Here's the thing - ads done in the style of mobile games are terrible, but integrated ads CAN work... like think of all the sports games that have ad banners.

Imagine playing Cyberpunk 2077 and an in-game screen has commercial breaks on a fake show, that are real commercials. They aren't in your face, they're just like there - passively on a TV you happen to be passing, McDonalds sounds good

Enter the Matrix back in 2003 had Powerade vending machines that you'd use to restore your health.

But to be clear, ads need to stay out of games.

fuck no to either.

there is no way they would make it cheaper, or use that extra money to make the game better than it would be w/o them

A game I played (City of Heroes) did this, and yeah, I didnt mind it at all; ads being done this way. They even included an option to disable them, which I didnt do. If anything I felt it added to the immersion.

For F2P games, sure. It's how they make their money.

If they're talking something like Elden Ring... It's gonna backfire on them so hard it will be a bloody nuke to the face. There's no sure-fire way to make a gamer refuse to play and despise a product than to slap a freaking coke ad in the middle of their immersive JRPG.

Yeah cup of noodles in final fantasy 15 didn't bother me. It had one side quest where it was in your face but it was amusing.

But billboards and stuff would make games that take place in the real world seem more realistic. Idk a good way to handle it in fantasy settings

Battlefield 2142 had billboard ads. For movies that came out in like 2003. Because it makes sense that they would be advertising 100 year old movies in the future for... reasons...

I'd go for products not movies if it was my call. Surely coke will still be around in 100 years

By then, only remakes would exist, no more original movies. We are already getting a lot of them.

Knew a guy who played a free mmo and in the main hub city there where the everywhere playing a old spice commercial on loop. That trademark whistle was stuck in my head for days.... like get at least a few different commercials or put something fake on to break it up

Racing games that I've played have had trackside billboards since 2007 or maybe earlier, just like real life. The game would be worse without them.

I don't know exactly what they're trying to add to F2P games here but they can go ahead, those games are all steamong piles of shit anyway.

I won't be buying any games which are interrupted by ads. Well-integrated ads which don't disrupt the gameplay experience could be considered, but I'd prefer that they just raise the purchase price of the game to cover their costs.

If it's just some random billboard then it doesn't matter even if it was a non free to play game. It would be annoying if they did ads you had to watch.

tbh a giant billboard advertising burger king would be excellent product placement since you can literally turn into the burger king in game anyways

Yeah, I pretty much only play cross platform games on PC. You guys have fun with that, though. Hopefully the consoles are powerful enough to load the ads.

They did do some brand for awhile. Don't remember the brand cause I never heard of it. Assume the brand was for clothes as the ads where various drawings of sf characters wearing clothes with the logo on it. I'm sure the Chun li one doing yoga was popular

Edit. Well the logo ain't on there clothes qnd the Chun one isn't as enticing as I remembered. Sure it was still a favorite if people had to pick though

For games I pay for, it would have to be something not in the way. Billboards in the game, or maybe something on the loading screens (if they have them), or even commercials for music (again, if available) But other than that, no. For free to play, I guess. But then I also want the ability to watch ads for free stuff Which I already do for mobile games already

I dont see an issue with product placement Type of adds Like they do in movies and tv shows so long as the focus is on the game and not the product.

for example a cutscene with a Toyota car dealership or a bar that has bottles of real world liquor in the background and someone orders oban or lavgulin in the background actually can add to immersion.

of course they would HAVE to include saints flow and every game should make reference to the real third street saints.

but I would have no issue with seeing a movie poster for dr strange In the background.

If it's limited to F2P stuff, I don't really mind, but I also kinda wonder how this is news. I guess ads in F2P console games isn't the norm, so I suppose it is actually a new thing.

Yeah, I'd completely avoid any paid game that interrupted my playtime to advertise something to me, and even free ones quickly become a waste of my time if they're obnoxious about that. Games are not cable. There will always be alternatives that aren't annoyingly ad-ridden.

Only when the ad makes sense. A sign or billboard kinda blends in... although it still rubs you the wrong way, I guess.

Pop!s wouldn't make a lot of sense since they go out of production. Cross-advertising digital products might be the best route if making money in-house, or advertising a brand if not.

Pop!s wouldn't make a lot of sense since they go out of production.

Generally speaking, the first few months that a game is out make up a considerable majority of its lifetime sales, and even those that pick it up later often made the decision to buy it at launch and just decide to wait (for a sale, to clear a backlog, until they're in the mood for that sort of game, etc.) until later to actually get it. Having some promotional funko pops that stop being produced a few months post-release would still help with that initial marketing push, and stopping production wouldn't really hurt because games tend to rely more on reviews and word of mouth after release to drive new interest, rather than promotional materials.

Free to play makes sense.

Selling ads in a game, like billboards, or maybe in the outfield in a baseball game, or something similar would ad realism to it.

Anything else, especially something that would interrupt game play is ridiculous.
