Barry season 2 was so blessed having Game of Thrones as its lead-in, and yeah that long break + no more GoT unfortunately reduced the audience quite a bit.

I like Barry but I've never really been impressed with the humor. A lot of it is random like the bomb app customer service, or the beignet guy, or low hanging fruit like theater people being vapid with no self awareness.

Like yes I laughed at the bomb app but it was so silly and random it felt a little unearned if that makes sense. Also I really don't care about noho hanks storyline or the mob storyline. They're like cartoon characters in this show.

I think I would like barry more if they just dropped the comedy because the drama elements are great.

i legitimately feel entirely the reverse. it's incredibly rare that i'm compelled by the drama (largely because it seems to rely on a lot of coincidence and plot armor and "what needs to happen so that this character can get their Acting Ability moment?" plotting), but the stupid, absurd comedy (it's bill hader, of course it's got stupid comedy) cracks me up all the time

the beignet guy was actually a bit of a miss for me in terms of humor, but yeah everything about the bomb, the theater people, etc. all hit for me. i laugh literally any time noho hank says... basically anything. i think sally might be intended to be a character we sympathize with, but i don't at all and still enjoy a lot of her scenes because they're so absurd/awful, even though the moments have dramatic consequences for her.

(edit) i should probably amend that - i actually thought the drama was reasonably interesting in season 1. i was holding my breath when barry decided to kill his friend, which was dramatically really satisfying. but that point was also where i realized barry was irredeemable, after which i found it difficult to get invested in any of the characters for drama anymore.

(edit 2) not entirely true about the drama - a lot of those storylines miss, but i was invested in sally leaving barry, even though i didn't like her. that was great.

Yeah I'm not exactly rooting for any of the characters because they're all awful. So to me it's like watching a Shakespearean tragedy and the B-plot is a Looney Toons episode.

Sure the humor is funny sometimes but other times it's just so random I can't appreciate it. Another example is when Gene got attacked by the 100 dogs. I feel like I could see the wheels turning of the writers trying to add a joke to the scene and coming up with that. But a joke that random and simple could literally be added to any scene. I think a LOT of the jokes are like that with this show and it plays like a step above Family Guy (you think that's bad) humor to me.

The humor mostly comes from invented situations that are wacky instead of actual character interactions or naturally from the plot. There are some exceptions of course but that's generally how I feel.

As far as black comedies go I think The Boys does a better job of skewering the absurdity of hollywood and the entertainment industry.

This season was amazing, but it was also rushed, at the same time. Something show did so well in the first two seasons was lingering longer on moments to give them space to breathe, and I felt like this particular season was cramming two seasons into one. Sally especially went so quickly through her arc that it never had a chance to ruminate in any of the stages she was in.

But all in all, the season was really very good. I just hope this pace doesn't remain in the next season.

Speaking of Barry, have you seen this @Snake5555555555 ?

Sorry for the hijacked topic, didn't think it warranted a new one. Plus I don't know what the context for their meet up is.

I saw it, it's awesome! I think they might be doing a fan-film project or something.
