Both those things are Republican though. It takes time and investment to reduce a deficit. You can't just drop spending immediately and temporarily and expect it to be a permanent fix. Well, you can, if you're a politician. But you'd be wrong.

regardless, reducing the deficit is something republicans actually claim to run on whether they do it or not
i don't think any mainstream democrat has even talked about it since bill clinton

Obama ran on a platform that included things that would reduce the deficit. So it's just Biden since Reagan made the deficit a relevant factor that hasn't run on a platform about reducing the deficit. And he might have indirectly, I just don't really care to look.

What do republicans have to do with this? Theyve been ballooning the national debt since Eisenhower, who only benefitted from demobilization of WW2. If not for that, no republican would have actually shrank the size of government. They are a both option, not an or option.
