I think people have legitimately forgotten how shitty the game was at launch.

Want to level thief? Sorry, nobody wants to party with you because a thief is just a bad warrior until like level 30.
Have an in-demand class like white mage? Sorry, you didn't pick the optimal race for that job so nobody will party with you.
Want to advance the story? Sorry, the next quest requires a full party
Hit a lag spike and die? Sorry, you've just lost hours of XP and a level and are now screwed because you sold your old equipment and you're now too low level for the current equipment.
Want to get to another city? Hope you set an hour aside.

Remember when killing a tough enemy gave you 100XP in a game where each level required exponentially more XP than the one before? What fun.

If that were true they wouldn't have so radically changed the game from expansion to expansion to specifically fix those problems. The effect race had on stats was drastically diminished, the trust system was added because people couldn't find parties, enemy XP was increased and the amount you got back from a raise was drastically improved to fix the leveling problem, and they eventually added more forms of transportation to get people from place to place.

I could write essays about the good ol days of FFXI

But something just came to mind recently playing Elden Ring. Some of the dungeons reminded me aesthetically of dungeons in FFXI, but failed to capture a lot of the challenge, and intrigue I remember having.

I cant really remember specifics but I remember there were a number of dungeons in FFXI that had very interesting mechanics that parties had to complete before progressing deeper in. Or just the layout of them was very labyrinthian. Some has multiple entrances / exits that connected to the overworld, so part of the fun was exploring all of it and figuring what led where.

I really miss those days where exploration was a key mechanic.

Dude the way travelling worked in FFXI was fucking awesome and Im genuinely nostalgic about it.

Trekking to new areas, to different cities and making the pilgrimage to Jeuno was fucking awesome. Having to work towards everything made you appreciate it that much more. Running through the world as a little vulnerable Red Mage until you got your chocobo license. Then finally getting your airship license felt so good.

Taking the ship Selbina (I hope im getting these right from memory), getting attacked by pirates or kraken along the way and seeing the other continent.

It really felt like this large world you inhabited. Now aint no one got time for that, but weve lost something significantly fun by making games play themselves and making every single aspect so convenient. Imho

or what you were gonna find. death meant something, information was scant and exploration was risky. it was so bizarre because it was this MMO that you knew tons of other people were playing, thousands on your server alone, but you frequently ran into shit that made you say WTF is that?

i remember the first time I ran into steelfleece or w/e the HNM ram in la thiene was. legit terrifying

I remember my first time on the ship. Just some low level noob heading to a new continent to see what Windurst looked like.

Then some high level player fishing caught a Sea Horror and it indiscriminately attacked everyone on the ship. When the ship docked all you saw were dead bodies everywhere.

I don't know why but my experience with FFXI is that I created a character, went outside of a town and basically didn't play anymore. Guess I didn't want to be saddled with the sub fee since I didn't have a job at the time iirc

it was a meme about #25 being hilariously wrong iirc

i copped a lot of blocks and moderations the last time i posted this topic. lot of xiv simps on the mod team i guess

but on the for real. the problem with xiv is that it has adopted the same shitty gameplay loop and vertical gear progression of most similar wow inspired MMOs. log in for your dailies, do you savages on reset, have no reason to play otherwise unless you like cringy erp pussy palaces.

idk peak FFXI just hit different. until they raised the lv cap (a mistake imo) shit like peacock charm was just permanently relevant, and it was beautiful. i played xiv from its 1.0 beta to shadowbringers and i swear, getting the emp pin or o kote meant more to me than getting my whm staff in TEA

I think my favorite thing about 11 was that you could gear swap at any time. This made the gearing so much more interesting imo. Yeah that peacock charm is fantastic in your tp set, but pretty ass in your ws set or in high accuracy situations. Better go farm up a gorget or something else to use.

for sure. it made gear that no one would have ever looked at otherwise actually have viability and value. your lv50 job set had relevance at 75. seriously 90% of the gear in that game was valuable somewhere. even if just as a low cost alternative to an HQ, or level capped bcnms, or leveling gear for other jobs. and the best part was, the vast majority could be resold so you could recoup whatever the investment was.

getting new gear just always felt good, no matter what it was. i remember some dope af jp player let me borrow his scorp harness +1 for a tp burn party, and i felt like the biggest pimp in the universe for hours. shit wasn't even mine lmao

Y'all have weird fucking memories of FFXI

My memories of the game are:
  • Camping leaping Lizzy for 3 months only to not get anything.
  • Spending more time trying to find a party than killing monsters
  • Obnoxious labyrinthine CS navigation
  • Having to run out of the whole fucking zone because someone thought it was funny to spawn in ghosts 20 levels higher than the rest of the enemies during every nightfall.
  • Goblin bomb TPK
This game was awful.

i never got anything from the prized NMs until after the drops went rare/ex, still fun af to farm
i mained DRG in RoZ/CoP. i just farmed while lfp, made shit tons of gil killing NMs in davoi on 15 minute respawn timers. you didnt have to sit in town. for example, /sea all 70-75 inv would show everyone in the world lfp in that level range IIRC
the risk of getting your shit packed in no matter what zone it was was awesome
only ever got MPKed once, while in dragon's aery fighting nidhogg
