Also, I agree with helping Ukraine, but I dont see how arming Ukraine isnt seen ready as a world war. Its pretty much World proxy war 3.

How about we use some of these billions to help pay off crushing student loans?

Ukrainian debt needs to be forgiven after this is over, and I hope we will be as generous in aiding Ukraine in rebuilding as we are in aiding its fight for its own existence.

And it really goes without saying we could and should be spending several times that at home, but the ruling political zeitgeist amongst our elites is that big, ambitious programs are definitionally bad and even just keeping the lights on is suspect. Certainly aid for Ukraine isn't coming at expense of any domestic measures, we have virtually infinite money, it's just the political will doesn't exist for it.

Like, can't we just do half the 33 and see where this goes in the mean time?

It's frustrating to see those kinds of numbers knowing any sort of aid package here is fought tooth and nail and stripped down to almost nothing.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure I read that EU or NATO has already approved long term tariffs on Russian goods (I think just gas and oil but maybe more) to make "the Russians pay for it".

I support us helping Ukraine in these hard times, but when will we help the American people with homelessness, starving and student loans? That is what bothers me.

We just invested 1.2 trillion on top of the 1+ trillion we invest every year.

No, but still. Certain folks love going on about how we should invest in our own country and stop giving money to other ones, but continue to vote and support politicians who are against investing in our country.

To put into perspective the numbers:

Ukraines total yearly exports in a given year is $44B, their total GDP is $155B
If passed we will be at $47B in aid

Likely by the end of the year we will have put more money into Ukraine than Ukraine produces and consumes at its peak

But that is the cost of war
