Mensis posted... Im surprised turning someone into fucking glass and shattering them isnt one of the forbidden spells right? you have all these people shooting off spells, but they don't say what they are because wordless magic is a thing, but they're all just like, blasts of just energy. however, the bad guys blasts are green so the implication is that it's the killing curse but the good guys balls are like blue and white, but when they hit a bad dude, the bad dude also fucking dies so what the fuck is going on here --- that's one body that'll never be found you see, little sister don't miss when she aims her gun ... Most of the combat in the HP series was underwhelming. She wrote in too many spells that functionally just turn wands into conventional weapons- I think that was a mistake, tbh. I genuinely think that the combat sequences were weak compared to other kids' fantasy books I remember reading as a kid. Like... Tamora Pierce has some metal af mage combat sequences. Street Magic has a section where the main character storms a wealthy murderer's estate with nothing but seeds, it's so goddamn cool... and there was that pirate siege book... man, maybe I should read those books again, it's probably been nearly 20 years since I read them. They did the same thing Rowling's books did, aging up with the audience, but I think in a lot of ways they were more... um... they were crafted with a more careful mind for what the consequences of including certain things in the setting would be, I guess would be how I'd word it? No one had to accidentally destroy all the time travel devices because the author didn't think about the consequences of putting time travel devices in her setting, lol. If you're looking for an author that targeted similar ages that liked to deal a lot with trauma in its many variations in her writing, Pierce is a good choice. I think Rowling is good at making quirky characters and memorable plot twists, but I get kind of irritated at how venerated she is. I read so many fun books as a kid, and sometimes it feels like people are too busy licking Rowling's boots to acknowledge any other authors or even accept that the books aren't the best books evaaar! Like that one post that went viral insinuating that Rowling was the first woman author, jfc... --- Hi ... Copied to Clipboard!
