I think it was a lot of people's first exposure to really weird and dense anime. It's good too, not stellar or anything, but combine those things and it makes a lot of lists.

It came out at the perfect time where todays millennials were teenagers and it struck a chord (uh wink) with so many.

Plus it had everything a growing boy wanted.

Waifus. Good music. Action. Absurd humor. "D E E P". And a longing for more that would never come (except it did).

How is Progressive and Alternative? I watched a bit of season 2 but got bored

Its a top 5 anime for me personally. Its just something that hit all the right notes for me. The music, the action, the comedy, the characters, basically all of it works for me. I just love it for being itself unabashedly. There's nothing else quite like it.

Also, saying FLCL is overrated isn't a hot take. While its certainly got its fans (like me), lots of anime fans don't like it or just thought it was okay or pretty good.

It's not top 5 material, but it's pretty damn good. Worth rewatching every now and then.

I don't think it's a hot take. There's people who can't handle fast paced stuff. If you don't like shit happening that fast paced you aren't going to like it.

The people that don't like FLCL are probably the same people that call fury road "one long car chase" and hate that movie too

I didn't care for it.

In high school, it was all the anime club president would let us watch for an entire year (2005-2006). It got so repetitive that I brought in one of those Wal-Mart bargain bin bootleg dubs of some low-budget Chinese cartoon and demanded a vote on what to watch, FLCL or that. The bootleg won. It wasn't better than FLCL, but it was something different at least.

The anime president, two years younger than me, hasn't spoken to me since even though I'm friends with their sibling.

Oh is that why people liked it? High school age? I only watched it a few years ago. A coworker of mine about a decade earlier ranted and raved about it but he was a massive stoner and did harder stuff a lot too. For context, one time he showed for work and was babbling to my boss about how sorry he was that he was 2 hours late and it was because he "ate some fucked up shit at a rave the night before." She let him work and said it was fine, then later realized he wasn't even on the schedule that day... so yeah, I just assumed most fans were... also like that.

It was fine. It was not deep or thoughtful like a lot of people tried to argue it to be.

I watched it when it came out 20 years ago and I had never seen anything like it on American television before. We were big fans of it. In hindsight it probably is overrated but it's one of those "you had to have been there" shows.

Again, this really comes down to the method of storytelling people are into. FLCL is very visual overload with its story, and some people just flat out do not like that. It's pointless to debate the quality of a deliberate aethestic

armandro that could be done using a random generator. You wouldn't necessarily get 5/5 every time, but ypu cpuld just remove any duds and re-randomize. Like playing 5 card draw poker.

It's decent, but it's not exactly mind-blowing. It's mostly just zany anime wackiness that's got some coming-of-age tropes thrown in for good measure.

I think the zaniness throws people off as just being there to be there, but it's almost entirely metaphorical representation done up in a very anime way. It's almost blindingly obtuse if you have no experience with it, but on rewatch, I felt dumb for not getting it before. Granted, I was 13.

Fun facts: The director for A:TLA made his staff watch FLCL.

It was good to me because I watched it before I knew about the American anime fans. Then after knowing the community, I ran....I ran so far away.

I enjoyed it well enough, but I can't remember too many people who had it in their "top 5" even back when I was exclusively using the anime & manga boards here, so it never really struck me as overrated.
