On DS, Im using the same save file from years ago. What happened I think is that I went to the far past, I might have gotten an item from there, but then you have to travel in time again to fix a certain weapon. I always thought I could just keep going until I recruited Ayla, so I was frustrated I couldnt figure out where to go. I figured it out now. Just beat Magus, got forcefully sent to the past, and the village is on fire. Frog still doesnt have magic because I havent been to the end of time with him, which was kind of a pain when fighting Magus, since I was also using Robo.

Okay so stuff happens a lot faster than I would have expected it to. Crono died (which I knew about), I just got done collecting all of the items/equipment, and killing only 1/4 of those turret things before they self-destructed. Using the all girl team at the moment. I was already using Ayla and Lucca against the twin Golems cause of the Fire + Fire Resist stuff, they just added Marle and I left her there.

Probably I feel like things are going fast cause I havent done much in terms of side quests. I remember hearing that sometimes if you open a chest in the past, you can miss out on stuff in the future, so Im hesitant to explore and then open the wrong thing.

As far as the treasure boxes go you want to interact with them in the past, but say no when it asks if you want to open it. Then go to the present and open them, what is in them will be upgraded.

This, and then you can go back and get the past ones as well.

>_>

I beat the game, I didn't really do any sidequests besides the one where you leave Robo in the past to be a gardener, and save Lucca's mom('s legs). I didn't revive Crono, beat the game with Robo/Magus/Ayla. I know I probably should have done the side quests, but Lavos still wasn't even that hard, so doing all that stuff would probably have made it a breeze.

In your opinion, does Chrono Trigger deserve its reputation as one of the best roleplaying games of all time?

Are you going to play the sequel, Chrono Cross?

The part you quit at is probably the most confusing part in the game (that and the initial Ayla recruitment). There's not a lot of breadcrumbs and you have to talk to specific people in a certain order to progress the plot.

If you're playing on the DS don't delve too deeply into the DS exclusive content unless you're willing to put up with a slog. Particularly, ignore the pokemon battles altogether and don't hold the post-game dungeons against the original game.

Considering how many years I dropped the game before finishing it, kinda hard to say. I think the minor differences of scenes depending on your party is nice, and it feels necessary sometimes to switch up your party, though this wasnt as important by the endgame. The positioning was a weird battle mechanic, sometimes you just couldnt use a tech if you wanted to. Honestly despite enjoying RPGs, my experience is somewhat limited, so Im not sure I could say one way or another. Ill say the mechanics of the game were rarely frustrating, so I imagine it was super amazing when it came out originally.

I might. Im aware it was rereleased somewhat recently. Kinda feel like I didnt get everything out of CT that I should. On the other hand, not sure Im up to doing a NG+ anytime soon.

Yeah, as far as I remember, everything before that was straightforward, and everything after I got the Masamune was as well.

Ive heard some bad things about the DS additions, like theyre trying too hard to connect Trigger and Cross.

You don't do the sidequests for the over-powered equipment, you do it because the stories are fun. >___>

Seriously the Toma/Rainbow Shell sidequest, the Frog sidequest, and the Robo (AD 2300) sidequest are great. Magus's sidequest is really short and a bit of a laugh. Ayla's sidequest is kind of lame. The pre-history quests always felt kinda boring to me.

Did you at least do the Black Omen?

I did go through the Black Omen. No chance I wouldve had the gear/levels to beat Lavos without it. Got like two Haste Helns, Prismatic stuff, Nova Armors, and Megalixers. I get the items arent the point, but I do feel like what I did allowed Lavos to feel like a threat, though I am regretful on missing out on other content. Ill try to go back some day.

For some reason I thought it was like Souls where youd be sent straight to New Game+, but you can actually just keep playing on the same file, so maybe Ill do those side quests after all.
