Really good. The story is the standard moe-glob affair, but with a bigger emphasis on characterization. As with all of the others whether or not you'll like the game is based pretty heavily on the alchemy system, and in this case it's pretty solid despite being a pretty notable simplification of the systems at play. While I can't say that it is necessarily the system that I had the most fun with (I'm a huge fan of Alchemy Tetris) it is definitely the one that feels the best to mess with as you very tangibly feel like a god for hitting 999's on everything and having it be based on you actually strategically going about it rather than just kind of abusing loops/guides online (the in-game information is much better than previous games for finding stuff out). There are also several other games in the series and if you want to play Sophie 2, the newest one, you might go back to those and do them first. Starting with the Mysterious Trilogy, Sophie/Firis/Lydie&Suelle, they mostly do away with the time limit and with how much of a step forwards Ryza is in just generic quality of life stuff it becomes a bit tricky to go back due to just how archaic they feel. Of them Sophie didn't have any time limits (that I recall), Firis had a time limit that mostly is there to just mess with you (in a way it kind of ruins the game as it makes you feel tense in the same way that the time limit does in the older games but because it's so long versus the actual content it's utterly irrelevant in the gameplay sense... as in the worst of both worlds), and L&S has one super random moment where you have an alchemy competition that has a month time limit to do but it is trivial to the point of it almost being weird to consider not doing it the literal first day. Shallie also lacks a time limit but as it's the last in the Dusk trilogy going back and doing just it would be a bit awkward. --- "A shouted order to do something of dubious morality with an unpredictable outcome? Its crazy how interested I am but don't touch it.In a generic sense as long as you're into moe or into crafting stuffs (and not super against the other) you'll like the series. It's largely just "comfort food" in game form with its story and doesn't really try to be anything particularly ground-breaking. The closest would be the Dusk trilogy but, really, that is extremely tame versus actually deep/dark stuff and mostly only gets the rep it has because the series has nothing even remotely resembling dark/deep outside of it. The crafting, on the other hand, is pretty much one of the best in gaming and changes constantly in very meaningful ways. While certain core bits have been the same for ages the actual gameplay parts of it change constantly and it gives each game a pretty fresh feel. It also hits all the right buttons as you can be just as OP as you want to be as your involvement in the system is rewarded any time you try to "go that one step further" when understanding the mechanics at play. Inversely you can mostly ignore crafting entirely and end up with a pretty standard RPG in terms of its gameplay. It scales pretty well. --- "A shouted order to do something of dubious morality with an unpredictable outcome? Thweeet!" My FC is in my profile. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Ayesha if you want to play a game with a time limit, Sophie if you think that there is a good chance you'll want to play more in the series, and Ryza if you want to just stick to modern Atelier/be safe with whether or not you'll like it. Ryza is probably the best for getting into the whole affair, but with all the QoL it has going backwards feels worse than just doing it all in order. --- "A shouted order to do something of dubious morality with an unpredictable outcome? Ryza is good. If you can find them for a good price and have a PS3, I think the entire Dusk trilogy is the best and most accessible Atelier. Or maybe there was a deluxe version or something released? Ayesha has a time limit, but it isn't punishing unless you want the true ending. Escha & Lodgy has a sort of time limit, but is quite forgiving and feels very structured. Shallie has no time limit at all, and was the definite start of that trend in the series. I wouldn't play the older games from the Arland series---they are absolutely brutal. Now, it might just be me. I'm a super fan who has played all of them (except the most recent two because of a backlog), but I'm not the best. I have to look up end game techniques every time. ... Irony posted... I really wish these trilogy packs weren't so expensive it's $180 for the Dusk and Mysterious trilogiesThey are on Steam and are quite cheap on sale. I want to say that the Mysterious Trilogy was $35 and the Dusk one was just below that ($25-30, IIRC). Sadly they had a sale recently so I have no clue how long you'd have to wait for the next one. And you can mostly ignore the others on the PS4 to some extent. Lulua only matters if you've played the Arland trilogy, Ryza 1/2 is the reason you made the topic, Sophie 2 only matters if you've played the Mysterious trilogy, and Nelke doesn't matter at all. Irony posted...
