Uncharted Waters 1 and 2: must-play if you haven't, esp. if you're looking for that kind of game

X: Beyond the Frontier: pretty good, but a bit tedious; I want to beat it so I can try more of the series but I lost interest near the end. one of these days...

Space Trader: Merchant Marine: not that great, and you seem to already have played it

(surprisingly both Uncharted Waters 1 and 2 are on steam, but not translated into English, only in Japanese. doesn't look as good as the SNES versions either.)

You can do it in real life and make a living at it. Just gotta start slow and get past any laziness of shipping, packing, labeling, listing. It will be annoying at first, but once you get good at it, it's no longer really a chore.

I didn't play that, but that was the most popular TI-83 game when I was in school

What's extra good is when there's an extra level to it and the places/towns/starbases will use the things you sell them to make advanced products

oh yeah, that's another one, I think, is Privateer (and possibly Privateer 2).

That's more or less the cross-server economy in FFXIV. Buy something from one world for cheap, go back to your home world/server to sell for a profit, and sit back as you become at least well-off with minimal effort.

There's a few older RPGs that used to have the mechanic where you could buy different trade goods (like spices, cloth, tea, etc) in different towns, and they'd have different prices in each town. So you sort of learn to take note of which towns sell certain goods cheapest and which buy them for the most, and you start trading.

Those aren't games where the main mechanic of the game is trading, though, just games where it's more of a side activity. And I honestly can't remember which specific games I'm thinking of, because it's been a looong time since I've played any JRPGs.

You can do the same thing in the Fabled Lands gamebooks - they're supposed to be epic fantasy adventures with exploration and combat, but if you really want, you could totally just become a merchant trader and sail from port to port, buying low and selling high, and occasionally fighting pirates or dealing with the occasional ghost ship or mermaids or the like. Then once you're rich, you can just retire and go on adventures. Or just challenge yourself to keep going as long as possible, to see how much money you can make before you start to get bored with the repetitive monotony.

EDIT: I think the earlier Suikoden games have that sort of mechanic. I seem to remember it being in them.

Black Desert Online. If you get bored of the combat, you could get something from one side of the map and transport it over to the other side for big profits.

Suikoden 2 introduced the markets, where you'd buy and sell goods and stuff would differ in value between regions.
I forget if any of the later games kept that.
