All I know about it is that it was a 2004 RPG with really surreal elements that released to mixed reception.

Anyone who played it, how was it?

Still great if you dont know they full story of it. Just play and explore what it has to offer but dont go in expecting something earth shattering. Its a 2000s RPG maker kinda game.

but its also Free on steam, so theres that.

Nowhere near the best RPG Maker 2000 game and does not deserve its fame over many other games made in that engine.

I think one of the best RPG Maker 2000 series is The Way

Fantastic series. Went downhill in the later episodes though

But the battle systems were really cool as well as the storyline.

The Way is fantastic, though I don't know what you're talking about with it going downhill. Episode 5 was definitely not as good as Episode 4, but it at least had some interesting plot points. Episode 6 had a nice, mysterious atmosphere to it. I liked that it was very different than the previous episodes without completely abandoning its links to the previous ones.
