what the fuck about pokemon just made us kids go absolutely apeshit for it

It's simple, it didn't try to overreach, it was just alternate reality Japan where you could interact with wildlife more meaningfully and go exploring. It plays off what people already naturally gravitate towards and didn't take an unnecessary amount of creative liberties.

This got worse with time, but it was building off the existing world people already got, and eveybody likes getting more on top of what they already enjoy, it's a lower bar for approval.

Other than the cultural censorships, it really didn't do anything wrong on the first few seasons.

Granted, I am still pissed off about the bullshit "Donuts" Kid me wanted to try those things so bad but I didn't know what to tell my parents what they were I knew they weren't goddamn donuts.

It's so weird to me when people refer to stuff like "onigiri = donuts" as censorship. It wasn't some conspiracy to keep American kids from learning about rice balls. It was just (arguably overaggressive) localization.

It was 100% cultural censorship, if you can't see that then you need to wake up.

It's a video game about creatures that you can catch and raise and watch them evolve to grow stronger. Also, you battle them. There's 151 of them in total, one of which is functionally unobtainable just to add to its mythical nature.

Oh, and there's a full season of a cartoon being released at the same time to promote it. This is all backed by the biggest video game company in the world.

It kind of explains itself how it became so huge.

Right place at the right time. It was the beginning of the first online generation meeting a global economy.

The show got me into it. I think the cards helped fuel my love of it. I think the interactiveness of different merchandise is what made it so popular.

I mean all you have to do is watch the show or play the games and its very apparent that these Pokmon do not want to be caught

all they did was shoehorn in a few lines of dialogue later about how great being a captive pokemon is and how well furnished the inside of their poke balls are

they established early on that the pokemon cant be caught if it doesnt want to

hence why they made balls that increasingly make it harder for the pokemon to escape

This is even worse than Dennis, since it's not even using implication. You straight up have to beat the shit out of a Pokemon and force it to stay in the ball and become your slave.

I think everyone can agree that what Dennis does isn't right, so if it's worse than what Dennis does, then it's definitely wrong.

If your audience is a bunch of western kids that have no idea what "onigiri" is, you may opt to switch it to a snack they would be more familiar with. Like donuts.

This is the exact same reason why, for instance, all the holidays in Animal Crossing get changed from Japanese holidays (White Day, Doll's Festival, Golden Week, etc.) to western ones (Halloween, Easter, etc.) when it is localized.

They might not know what onigiri is, but they'd know what rice balls are.

The locale is the US.

And people know what rice is, they also know what donuts look like. At least the handy frying pan isn't inaccurate per se.
